Yale’s Sustainability Leaders Program has taken root across campus. The Sustainability Leaders Program which began last fall with twelve individuals has expanded to a group of more than forty individuals representing thirty-three different departments. These volunteers are working with the Office of Sustainability to create sustainable workplaces on both the medical and central campuses. Sustainability Leaders volunteer a few hours each month to educate their co-workers about the importance and ease of adopting sustainable office practices including green purchasing, energy conservation measures, and waste reduction and recycling efforts. Once a month sustainability leaders meet to receive updates and information on Yale’s sustainability initiatives and to discuss the progress and challenges within their individual offices.
In the short life of the program, some notable successes have already taken place. One example of Sustainability Leadership worth noting comes from the Office of the Secretary, where they have begun tracking their purchasing, recycling, and conservation in order to assess their current situation and to aid in measuring their success. We commend the Office of Secretary’s outstanding leadership in sustainability and will be highlighting other noteworthy examples of sustainability within workplaces.
Sustainability Leaders are now forming “Green Teams” within their offices and departments with the goal of encouraging broader participation and facilitating the transition to a more sustainable work environment. If you are interested in being part of a Green Team in your office or department, contact your Sustainability Leader. If your office or department is not currently represented in our program and you would like to volunteer, please contact Bob Ferretti, Education Outreach Manager, Yale Office of Sustainability, at 432-1446 or robert.ferretti@yale.edu
