Summer 2008 Campus Sustainability Student Exchange

between The Australian National University (ANU),University of Oxford,

and Yale University

The Australian National University (ANUgreen) and the University of Oxford will collectively host 2-3 Yale students as part of a Campus Sustainability Student Exchange program. Students will work closely with professionals at each of the universities to support the development and implementation of campus sustainability projects. Selected students will live in on-campus housing and work in the respective sustainability related offices for the duration of the program.

Possible project topics range from greenhouse gas reduction strategy development, transportation demand management, renewable energy technologies, to waste management and cultural change towards sustainability. See university specific projects below.

Students will work a 35+hour week and be based at the ANUgreen Office on the Acton campus of the Australian National University and in the University Estates Office at the University of Oxford. Students will have access to all the resources they might require to complete their projects.

Specifics:

  • The internship must take place between June 15th and August 15th, 2008. Students must commit 6 weeks minimum.
  • Yale – Office of Sustainability will provide a stipend of $3000 to cover the cost of airline ticket and food.
  • The host university will provide on-campus housing.
  • Interested applicants must submit a resume, cover letter and 250-word essay describing how this opportunity fits into their studies.  Application deadline is Friday, February 29th, 2008.

Project examples:

University of Oxford

1. Web Site development -. A concentrated attempt at bringing the information on all our green, environmental and sustainability issues, plans, initiatives and successes to the public.

2. Transport - In a City where the car is viewed as an enemy, and the University has very few car parking places, much effort has to go into planning how people can get to work, and around the city without the need for personal motorised transport. This inevitably leads to a reliance on public transport especially for the more widespread locations of the University - yet the available public transport does not run at the times or between the locations most useful to us. Help is required for our transport manager to plan and set up contracts with local public transport providers to run routes that will work for us together with balancing the subsidy/ profit equation.

3. Waste - We need to manage our waste better - recycle more and produce less - and for this, we need to plan a way forward; negotiate University-wide contracts, and devise ways of 'selling' this to the University's departments, and also introduce ways of measuring waste production/ recycling so that we can begin to tackle the bigger problem of producing too much. This would be undertaken in conjunction with our waste manager, Kate Aydin and the procurement department of Finance as well as meeting administrators in a variety of departments.

4. Energy Audits - We are about to embark on a comprehensive and thorough survey of energy use in each of our buildings - with a target of hitting the highest 20 users this year. The surveys (which will be conducted by external consultants) will form the basis of an action plan for each building on how we might reduce energy usage - or more importantly - carbon production from it by a significant amount. We anticipate this will be a range of physical interventions and management practices.

1. Marketing Plan for ANUgreen

ANUgreen would like to see a marketing plan developed that provides a template for the who, what, why, when, and where’s of marketing throughout the year. Who needs to be contacted for inclusion in O-week activities, when do we need to get snippets into the annual student diary, how do we get info into new resident welcome packs at the halls and colleges, etc. This project would also involve work on the ANUgreen website and has the potential to include a whole range of other interesting features such as development of a sustainability blog, wiki and podcast.

2. Performance and Visual Art for Sustainability

ANUgreen would like to use a variety of means to reach the campus community and beyond. This project would facilitate community engagement in art for sustainability and might include events around poetry, music, sculpture in the landscape, design, etc. The intern would also ensure that these events are captured through photography, YouTube, podcasts, etc.

3. Green Building Research at ANU

This project would encompass a variety of green building features dependent on the student’s interest. It might include a feasibility study of green and brown roofing versus better insulation, feasibility of small scale wind power, research into minimizing the impact of laboratories through process cooling units, research on heating and cooling ie. heat recovery technology, influencing user behaviour, thermal modelling and retrofitting for efficiency.

4. Promotion of the ANU Green Loan Fund

ANU has a three million dollar green loan fund dedicated to reduce the environmental impact of activities associated with our teaching and research. The intern would work closely with other interns and staff members to market the fund and to identify opportunities for green loan applications.
