Bates College

Bates' custodial services use all Green Seal paper products, which are composed of 100% recycled materials. The college is also using greener cleaning solutions.

Brown University

Brown has established an initiative to take a more holistic perspective toward purchasing. This new system requires purchasers to consider a given product’s supply chain and to examine its lifecycle environmental implications. Brown is encouraging faculty, staff and others to find opportunities for purchasing "environmentally friendly" materials and equipment.

Columbia University

Columbia purchases green cleaning products, and has many dilution control systems in custodial work areas around campus that properly dispense and dilute cleaning products. These products have Green Seal approval and exceed EPA, and regional green guidelines. Columbia also trains the custodial staff in these products’ use. In addition, Columbia has switched to triple-filtration, ergonomically designed canister vacuum cleaners that are lighter, safer, and more efficient. It also bought ENERGY STAR rated ergonomically designed floor care equipment to reduce vibration, noise, and energy use.

Cornell University

Approximately 60% of the paper Cornell consumes contains more than 30% recycled content, and 80% of printing is done on recycled paper. All of Cornell's office suppliers participate in recycled toner carriage programs, its carpeting supplier is a leader in the use of recycled materials, and its furniture supplier is a leader in green purchasing, manufacturing and distribution.

Dalhousie University

The university bookstore is stocking green products and encouraging re-usable bags. Residence and food services have focused efforts on increasing local food content, fair-trade products, and sustainability education.

Harvard University

Harvard provides advice to encourage green purchasing in an array of different departments of the university.

Keene State College

All copier and printer paper is 80% - 100% recycled content paper that is processed chlorine free. Tissues, towels and napkins must have 35-65% recycled content. When contracting with any vendors or contractor, Keene requires that this company describe the sustainability of its practices. Contracts with some outside vendors include provisions to take back their waste. The Keene Purchasing office also manages the surplus program. In tandem with the Recycling Office, Purchasing has developed protocol for deconstructing buildings instead of demolition and protocol for diverting items like furniture and computers from the waste stream. In December 2007 Keene became an Energy Star campus.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

MIT seeks to purchase the most environmentally friendly products feasible, and to reduce its use of toxic materials. MIT is gradually increasing its use of recycled paper products, and the Copy Technology Centers now use recycled content paper for virtually all of their copies.

Princeton University

Princeton currently purchases 100% recycled paper; it seeks also to convert to 100% green cleaning products.

Tufts University

The Purchasing Department of Tufts seeks to guarantee quality goods and services that are produced in a manner consistent with the University's mission of sustainability.

University of Connecticut

The University of Connecticut’s green purchasing policies reflect policies set by the state of Connecticut. These policies include the use of Green Seal certified cleaning products, energy star appliances, and 30% post consumer recycled content paper. In addition, the Fleet Fuel Efficiency workgroup has developed preferred purchasing guideline for departmental vehicle purchases.

University of New Hampshire

The University System of New Hampshire (USNH) has a standard sustainability statement. It states that USNH strives to conduct business in a sustainable and energy efficient manner. USNH Purchasing & Contract Services collects from each of its contracted vendors their environmental mission statements or information about any programs or policies that have to do with sustainability. These programs or policies can be, but are not limited to, reducing, reusing and recycling resources; disposal of organic and other solid waste; conservation efforts in regards to transportation, energy and water; disposal of hazardous waste; and/or giving back to the community. USNH also lists "environmental impact" as one of its evaluation criteria in determining how to award a contract. UNH established an Energy Efficient Product Standard that recommends that its community members purchase products that meet specifications of the ENERGY STAR program.

University of Vermont

UVM currently purchases copier paper that is 100% recycled and chlorine free.

Yale University

Yale is establishing a strong green purchasing infrastructure that seeks to make sustainability a key factor in general procurement decisions. Many major product suppliers are responding to this demand and working to carry Environmentally Preferable Product lines, reduce packaging, and provide end of life recovery. Yale currently recommends 100% recycled content paper, and encourages the purchase of low emissions vehicles when possible.
