Allegheny College

The Commonwealth Community Energy Project was formed with the Center for Economic and Environmental Development at Allegheny to link faculty, staff and students with local organizations to address issues of energy efficiency in Meadville through energy audits and recommendations. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is offering rebates of $500 to partially offset the costs of energy audits to the first to commit to these. In addition, Creek Connections has brought together Allegheny students and local schools to study waterways of the region, emphasizing hands-on investigation. This project involves over forty secondary schools, and culminates an annual symposium at the College. Allegheny also runs the Climate Change Initiative, a yearlong effort to increase public awareness and education around climate change and to promote individual efforts to counter this.

Bates College

Bates seeks to develop permanent, consistent forums for outreach and education about how Bates is working toward sustainability, how this relates to nationwide efforts, and how this affects citizens. It is using several means of communication, including a website, quarterly newsletter, annual report, partnerships, recognition programs, conferences, and orientation materials. Its Green Campus Education Program features more interactive events with outreach materials such as a RecycleMania competition, Clean Sweep, Sustainability Concerts, an Environmentally themed house, and an energy conservation dorm competition. Bates is also working to expand sustainability into the curricula and to involve students in campus sustainability through coursework.

Bowdoin College

Bowdoin follows several paths for involving students, accepting interns and research assistants in the office of sustainability, and hiring EcoReps to teach the greater Bowdoin community about sustainable living. These students focus on promoting education and involvement of other students in activities such as the organic garden and the RecycleMania competition.

Brown University

Brown has a strong infrastructure for involving students in sustainability, with an eco-rep program, a sustainable food initiative with an on-campus farm, and an undergraduate council of students. Brown has also begun a pilot program to educate the community about sustainability, providing grants to support carbon mitigation through the Community Carbon Use Reduction at Brown project.

Columbia University

Columbia offers a number of academic seminars and courses focusing on sustainability. It also offers resources to students on living green lifestyles.

Connecticut College

A summer internship has been designed to involve Connecticut College students in the sustainability initiatives of the college. During the year, House Environmental Representatives are appointed to promote and educate students in the dormitories they represent on environmental issues, and to promote environmentally friendly practices. There are also faculty or staff equivalents who participate in the Building Environmental Representative program to guide and assist colleagues on environmental matters.

Cornell University

Cornell has established a number of pathways for student and staff involvement in sustainability initiatives. The Campus Green Team seeks to establish and work toward best practice guidelines for students, faculty and staff. It aims to foster a sustainable environment by creating initiatives and educational programs and setting positive examples. Students and staff also collaborate on the Kyoto Task Team, Green Purchasing Task Force, Green Building Oversight Committee, Facilities Services Sustainable Computing Committee, Cornell Dining Local Foods Advisory Council, and Cornell Bicycle and Pedestrian Traffic Safety Committee.

Dalhousie University

The University has and continues to offer lectures, courses, programs, research opportunities, and publications on environment and sustainability. Strong community-university partnerships are an ongoing theme through initiatives such as the Eco-Efficiency Centre and the signing of three international declarations: the Halifax Declaration, the Talloires Declaration, and the UNEP International Declaration on Cleaner Production. In recent months an inter-faculty Steering Committee has been formed and is exploring possibilities for new interdisciplinary academic programming in environment and sustainability through campus-wide workshops and discussion.

Harvard University

Harvard has developed a comprehensive energy conservation education program. 20 undergraduate Green Living Representatives lead events and activities encouraging residents to adopt environmentally sustainable lifestyles. In addition to advising on recycling, water and electricity conservation, these representatives are invited to suggest policy improvements that can remove barriers to conservation. The graduate Green Living Program provides similar peer-to-peer training and education for residents in graduate housing. In addition, the Extension School Course on Achieving Institutional Transformation for Environmental Sustainability is made available to students and distance learners, addressing practical challenges of sustainability, using Harvard as a case study.

Johns HopkinsUniversity

Johns Hopkins University has a number of programs for involving students in the campus’ sustainability efforts, including the Eco-Rep program, internships at the office of sustainability, and dorm competitions for sustainability. The university has also pioneered the Green Idea Generator. This program seeks to institutionalize students’ sustainability contributions through student and staff brainstorming sessions about greening campus initiatives. This has ushered in three key projects so far: the Waste Vegetable Oil Project, the Green Roof Project and the Paper Reduction Campaign.

Keene State College

The President's Council for a Sustainable Future at Keene State College seeks to affirm that all at Keene have a responsibility to take leadership in activities as stewards of the environment. The council strives to support educational and institutional activities promoting environmental awareness and stewardship through local action. It seeks to foster a college-wide proactive learning community and to provide an interdisciplinary resource group for environmental activities. Regular communications about Sustainable activities, called Eco-Notes, are placed in various print and electronic publications to all students, faculty and staff. An active Eco-Reps program gives students information about campus resource use that they can share with their peers. Speakers, displays and events are ongoing. Partnerships with student groups, like Campus Ecology, and faculty provide academic and social projects for students. A Sustainable Living Community is in its’ first year as part of a living/learning community.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

MIT's offices of the environment have jointly developed a program for research assistants in order to educationally involve undergraduates in the practical research questions of MIT's sustainability work. This program has been very popular among both students and the sustainability professionals working with them. MIT has also been involved with regional environmental interests and is a founding member of the Clean Charles Coalition, consisting of industries, academic and research institutions, public interest groups and other organizations that have joined to support a fishable and swimmable Charles River through well-defined projects and outreach programs.

Princeton University

Princeton encourages collaboration and education with the Princeton Sustainability committee of students, faculty and staff, chaired by the President of Facilities. This committee meets regularly to advise on improvement of Princeton's sustainability work. In addition, the Princeton Environmental Initiative has run outreach programs for K-12 students and teachers, community college undergraduates, professors and the general public. Outreach events have been supported by the Princeton Environmental Initiative research units and funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.

Skidmore College

Skidmore seeks to "develop, broaden, and deepen the College's connections to the local community; enhance our ability to function as a socially and environmentally responsible corporate citizen."

Tufts University

In its outreach to students, Tufts seeks to develop leadership skills in students with a passion for the environment, and to encourage them to share this view with the rest of the student body through the EcoRep and other outreach programs. These programs have included bulb exchanges, energy saving education, classes, community building events, etc. Tufts seeks to act as a role model of sustainability for other institutions and offers downloads, speaking engagements, workshops and trainings, home energy efficiency seminars, a 5-year report, an open letter to President Bush and green building case studies.
