Research Assistant Position:
Sustainability Fellow: Finance and Business Operations
The Yale Office of Sustainability and the Yale Office of Finance and Business Operations are collaborating to assess opportunities for the University’s business operations to streamline systems, decrease environmental impact, and save money through sustainability practices. The Finance and Business Operations Sustainability Fellow will undertake analysis and outreach in support of these goals. Duties and responsibilities will include:
- Liaising with representatives from departments around campus to discuss this initiative and document ideas and feedback
- Assessing the viability of diminishing resource use and saving money through analysis of select current systems
- Assisting with financial analysis to assess the financial viability of possible sustainability-related transitions
- Coordinating meetings of the sustainable business practices working group and subcommittees
- Arranging periodic guest lectures that will offer sustainability perspectives to the university’s business office professionals
- Communicating with other sustainability fellows around campus to idea-share and foster collaboration between departments
- Researching “best practices” and developing recommendations
- Helping to identify opportunities for academic integration
This position will begin as soon as possible and will conclude in the first week of May 2010. The ideal candidate has good written and oral communications and some experience with or education in financial management.
The Yale Office of Sustainability coordinates the Yale Sustainability Fellows Program as a component of the Yale Sustainability Task Force. This group of Fellows will convene monthly to discus the University’s Sustainability Goals, foster collaborations on behalf of their departments, and identify challenges and opportunities. These Fellowships are open to undergraduate and graduate students of all disciplines.

Research Assistant Position:
Sustainability Fellow: Yale Computing
The Yale Office of Sustainability and the Yale Office of Information Technology Services are collaborating to assess opportunities to reduce the University’s computer-related energy use and assess and advance opportunities to use technology to streamline systems and diminish resource use. The Computing Sustainability Fellow will undertake analysis and outreach in support of these goals. Duties and responsibilities will include:
- Collaborating with the various members of the ITS team to determine sustainability solutions related to software, hardware, purchasing, and behavior change
- Researching best practices related to computer-related solutions for diminishing environmental impacts
- Helping to develop, distribute, and assess surveys of targeted groups of end-users
- Developing outreach materials including website content and fliers on best practices
- Assisting with the development of sustainability training materials for the Computer Support Team
- Liaising with representatives from departments around campus to discuss this initiative and document ideas and feedback
- Communicating with other sustainability fellows around campus to idea-share and foster collaboration between departments

Research Assistant Position:
Sustainability Fellow: Paper Reduction Analyst
The Yale Office of Sustainability and the Yale Office of the University Printer are collaborating with departments around the University to assess opportunities to streamline systems, decrease environmental impact, and save money by reducing reliance on paper-based systems. The Sustainable Paper Practices intern will work with these offices to design and execute a test case and to collect information and resources from around the university. Duties and responsibilities would include:
- Liaising with representatives from departments around campus
- Working with the Office of the University Printer to plan and execute a pilot project
- Coordinating with ITS and RIS on technology-based tools for transitioning away from paper
- Helping to develop systems to identify opportunities for academic integration
- Developing “best practices” and recommendations
- Coordinating meetings of the paper reduction working group and subcommittees
This position will begin as soon as possible and will conclude in the first week of May 2010.

Sustainability Fellow: Paper Practices Communications
The Yale Office of Sustainability and the Yale Office of the University Printer are collaborating with departments around the University to assess opportunities to streamline systems, decrease environmental impact, and save money by reducing reliance on paper-based systems. The Sustainable Paper Practices Communications Assistant will work with these offices to develop, draft, and design educational and outreach materials related to reducing paper use and increasing recycling on campus. Duties and responsibilities would include:
- Liaising with representatives from departments around campus
- Working with the Office of the University Printer and the Office of Sustainability to identify key messages for outreach
- Developing online training materials for wide distribution in the Yale community
- Coordinating with training divisions to develop course materials
- Conducting interviews with end-users in order to assess the efficacy of particular messages and identify potential challenges
- Developing “best practices” and recommendations
- Helping to coordinating meetings of the paper reduction working group and subcommittees
This position will begin as soon as possible and will conclude in the first week of May 2010.
