Research Assistants

After graduating from Brown University with a Sc.B. in Geology-Biology and a B.A. in Literatures in English, Jason Rauch enrolled in and eventually received his M.E.Sc. from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies in May of 2006. He has now begun studies at Yale for a Ph.D., studying under the tutelage of professor Tom Graedel. Jason plans to spatially model the combined technological and natural stocks and flows of the major metals utilized in human society. Jason hails from the small town of Winslow, Maine.

Sara Smiley Smith
, MESc MPH, graduated from the joint masters program between the School of Epidemiology and Public Health and the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies at Yale in 2007. She is now pursuing a doctoral degree at the University with a focus in sustainability and the process of innovation diffusion. In 2005 and 2006, Sara's work in the Office of Sustainability centered around improving move-out recycling and reuse efforts on the undergraduate campus known as Spring Salvage. In 2007, she worked to envision and implement Yale's first annual Sustainability Summit, a series of campus wide events designed to communicate sustainabiltiy initatives around campus, celebrate achievements, and encourage dialogue. Sara is now leading two teams of graduate students who will explore opportunities to advance the sustainabilty of both the Health Services and Athletics departments on Yale's campus. Prior to arriving at Yale, Sara received her B.A. in Environmental Studies and Political Science from Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT in 2004. Sara grew up in the small town of Winslow, Maine, a place she misses most in the fall.

The Office of Sustainability’s Web RA, MJ Truong, is an undergraduate at Yale University and a member of the class of Davenport, 2010. Her major is Humanities, and her hobbies include glass art, sewing, playing music, photography, web design, and, as of this semester, silkscreen printing.

MJ grew up in Fair Oaks, which is a small town outside of Sacramento, CA.

Nicole Allan, a senior English major in Yale College, is excited to be working at the Sustainability Office for the first time. Originally from Los Angeles, she’s focused mostly on journalism at Yale and is currently editor of The New Journal, an undergraduate magazine about Yale and New Haven. She’s looking forward to bringing that experience to her work with Julie on a writing project about institutional sustainability during the past ten years.

Meg Holden is a senior Political Science major at Yale College.  Last fall she studied international relations at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, Spain.  Her academic interests lie in international development and environmental politics, and she spent her past summer researching environmental conservation at Niokolo Koba National Park in Senegal.  In addition to working for the Sustainability Leaders Program at the Office of Sustainability, Meg coordinates senior events for Morse College and performs with one of Yale's many talented a cappella groups, "Mixed Company."

Matthew Thurston is a student at Yale's School of Forestry & Environmental Studies where he is a candidate for a Master of Environmental Management. His academic and professional pursuits include energy policy, environmental history, stream restoration, and the efficient use of natural resources. At F&ES he is studying industrial ecology. Matt hopes to apply the skills and knowledge he has gleaned from industrial ecology to his job at the Office of Sustainability. He looks forward to improving the sustainability of the university with his project team.

Matt is a native of San Antonio, Texas. He holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies and Government from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. His personal interests include international relations, renewable energy, and stream hydrology. Matt is also involved in the efforts of Yale Recycling.


Anna Ruth Pickett is on the Sustainability Research Project Team working with Yale Health Services. She is a candidate for a Masters in Environmental Science (2010) at the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Anna is interested in environmental health, indoor pollution, and environmental justice. She graduated from Oberlin College in 2002 with a BA in environmental studies and since then has worked in the non-profit sector focusing on the environment, domestic violence, politics, and labor. For the past 2.5 years, Anna has worked in NYC for the Ford Foundation's Community and Resource Development unit assisting the Environmental Justice, Mixed-Income Housing, and Active Public Space initiatives. Anna grew up in Vermilion, Ohio, a small town on Lake Erie west of Cleveland.

Kate Ittleman is a Masters of Public Health graduate student from Charlotte, VT. She graduated from the University of Vermont in 2006. Her current focus is the epidemiology of microbial disease and she is very interested in the connections between environmental and human health. She looks forward to working on the Yale Health Services team to improve their sustainability practices.


Kyle Williams was born and raised near Kalamazoo, Michigan. He holds a B.S. in Mathematics and a B.A. in French, both from Hope College in Holland, MI. During his undergraduate career he also studied engineering and chemistry in addition to spending a semester studying at the Universite de Haute Bretagne, Rennes II, in Rennes, France.

 

His focus here at F&ES is on sustainable development and urban planning, both in domestic and international contexts. Specifically, he is developing the technical skills and knowledge to work within community education and empowerment programs that address both technical problems at the community and household scale as well as the social justice issues inherent to those situations. He expects to complete the Masters of Environmental Management program in May of 2010 and either go to work for an existing organization (likely non-profit or NGO) or to create his own.


Tyler Hill is a senior in Pierson College hoping to graduate with a degree in Philosophy. His studies focus primarily on mathematical logic, metaphysics and epistemology.

Tyler has worked as an editorial intern at BusinessWeek and SmartMoney magazines, covering everything from environmental innovation to corporate bonds. His interests in addition to philosophy and journalism include music -- particularly classical organ and piano -- literature and running. During the comming year he will work on the Office of Sustainability newsletter.


Rachel Hsu is currently a 2nd year graduate student in the Joint M. Architecture I and M. Environmental Management degree program with the School of Architecture and the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Prior to coming to Yale, Rachel completed her undergraduate studies at Stanford University and graduated with a B.S. in Engineering – Product Design in 2006. Rachel grew up in Chico, a small town in Northern California.

Erin Savage grew up in Eastern Washington state and attended the University of Washington as an undergraduate. After completing degrees in biology and philosophy, she traveled extensively around the world and became interested in various environmental issues. She is currently a masters candidate in the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

Jessica Siegal, a member of the Athletics Project Team, is a candidate for the
Masters of Environmental Management at the School of Forestry and Environmental
Studies. She is a native of Greater New Haven and has returned home after
living and working in New York City as a fundraiser for the Rainforest
Alliance. Her interests include sustainable land management, consumer
education, agriculture and water scarcity. She graduate from Boston University
in 2002 with a BA in Political Science.

Sophie Wolfram is the co-director of the Student Taskforce for Environmental Partnership (STEP), which works on outreach and education for the Office of Sustainability. She is a junior history major focusing in environmental history, and she is particularly interested in the history of agriculture in England and in the United States. She has worked as an education intern with a reforestation project in Costa Rica and as a Yale Farm intern, and she has been involved with STEP since the fall of 2007. Sophie grew in White Plains, New York.

Kate Gasner is a senior in Saybrook at Yale College. Studying Environmental Engineering, she is most interested in water issues in the context of sustainable development. Kate is originally from San Francisco and is interested in anything outdoors! After working with sustainability via student outreach for the majority of her time at Yale, Kate is excited to research and engage in other components of the Office's work.
