The University of Copenhagen’s Green Light House kick off event earns a gold rating under Yale’s Office of Sustainability’s sustainable event guidelines. In order to attain the Gold rating, the University of Copenhagen fulfilled the eight minimum criteria for holding a sustainable event.

These included holding the event outside and during the daytime, which eliminated the need for electricity. The University of Copenhagen took it a step further by encouraging guests and speakers to wear layers of clothing, thus eliminating the need to heat their outside tent.

In keeping with Yale’s Sustainable Event standard guidelines, paper use was reduced by eliminating name tags, printing a small amount of handouts and guides, and using a very limited amount of posters for publicity. In addition, all invitations and RSVP’s were sent electronically.

With regards to transportation, the majority of the attendees traveled by bike or walked, and information on public transportation was provided to guests. Since the majority of the attendees were from the university the event’s carbon footprint was minimal.

The event’s caterers also followed the food guidelines provided by Yale catering and ensured that the food was organic and local, and that the service ware was reusable.
The Office of Sustainability commends our colleagues at the University of Copenhagen for their efforts to green their events and wishes them the best on their new sustainable building project.
