GREENFEST 2009 a success

On Friday, October 23rd, the Student Taskforce for Environmental Partnership and the Yale Student Environmental Coalition collaborated to run the second annual GreenFest event on Old Campus. The event aimed to engage a broad range of students and specifically the freshmen who reside on Old Campus.

Though the chilly weather did keep some students indoors, many came to participate in the plethora of environment-themed activities that were offered. From Oil Drum Art to 350 Day of Climate Action photo petitions, students were able to express their sustainability views and creative visions in a variety of ways. Many students wrote postcards to their Senators on Capitol Hill to push for climate change legislation, and other students "shopped" for a new outfit at the Eli Exchange Extravaganza. During the entire event, students were entertained by musical acts from student bands while enjoying seasonal apples and cider. All in all, more than 100 people partook in the photo petitions and 57 signed postcards to their Senators in a Greenfest success that drew several hundred students.

This Friday afternoon, from 1-4pm STEP (Student Taskforce for Environmental Partnerships) and YSEC (Yale Student Environmental Coalition) are teaming up to bring sustainability to the student body on Old Campus. With a wide range of activities, students will find the chance to engage in everything from environmental politics—writing postcards to politicians; to art—creating banners and painting oil drums; from personal sustainable measures—taking the sustainability pledge; to new clothes—“shopping” for a new outfit through the Eli Exchange. Organizers hope that the event will showcase how easy it can be to make sustainability a fun part of the student lifestyle while connecting personal action to Yale’s long term goal to reduce GHG emissions. Of course, music and food will be plentiful, with student acts playing throughout the afternoon and apples, cider and cookies for all.
