Closing out the season is The Vote: Bacchae, a production of Euripides’ The Bacchae that the SC07 audience owns—it was selected by a wide margin from among three plays by the Summer Cabaret audience, voting online and with paper ballots.
In an extraordinary step beyond normal audience participation, the voting didn’t stop there—the audience picked the staging location (Cabaret garden and the black box theatre space), liquids to be used in the production (wine and honey), as well as a special dessert for the menu (Dionysus’ Molten Chocolate Cake)! See all the voting results.
Dionysus, god of wine, revelry, sex and theater, has returned to Thebes and expects to be worshiped. Pentheus, king of Thebes, would rather die than worship an effeminate foreigner with no heavenly credentials – he may get his wish. Erotic, physical, messy, violent and exciting, The Bacchae is an enduring classic with contemporary resonance.
