It’s 1863 Louisiana, close to the end of the American Civil War. Demeter, an escaped slave, evades confederate soldiers by hiding in the basement of a decrepit plantation house. There he enters the lives of Cadence Verse, her daughter Blanche, and the mysterious orphan Free Girl. The four have more in common then they ever imagined and they affect each other’s lives in ways they never thought possible. Marcus Gardley’s vivid poetry tells a powerful story of transformation, love, betrayal, and forgiveness.
