Summer Cabaret at Yale

New Work is the lifeblood of the theater. Graduates of the Yale School of Drama playwriting program are the pulse. They are a vital force, constantly challenging, inspiring and entertaining audiences worldwide. Summer Cabaret 2003 is dedicated to celebrating the future of theater by highlighting the past and present voices of the Cabaret. Two alumni and two current Yale playwrights will take part in this season of brand-new work. We look forward to sharing the power and passion of these plays with Greater New Haven.

Now is the time to guarantee yourself a summer of compelling and engaging theater, combined with exquisite cuisine. Doors open at 6:30pm for dinner and performances start at 8pm. Subscribe to the Summer Cabaret and enjoy a season of thought provoking entertainment under the leadership of Artistic Director Emmy Grinwis and Managing Director Sarah K. Bartlo. Our team of theater artists waits eagerly to welcome you to the theater.

Summer 2003
Performance Schedule

The Ten Thousand Things
by Melissa James Gibson
directed by Emmy Grinwis
June 18-21 and June 24-28

Four friends, or strangers, or enemies, spend a day (perhaps everyday?) on a seemingly typical New York City street. Stranded between a laundromat, an old movie theater and an off-track betting location, Dex hatches a sure-fire scheme to make money on horses, while Fisk tries to do the “job he was hired to do.” Dell, a.k.a the Laundry Lady, hauls enormous piles of dirty clothes into the laundromat, and Ina loses everything. Absurd, yet strangely normal, lonely and together, lost and found, the four come together in ways they never thought possible.

livin tired
by Marcus Gardley
directed by Emily Lou Wilbur
July 9-12 and July 15-19

The war veteran Ham Greene lives in a cemetery on the plot of land where he wants to be buried. His best friend, Rue McCloud, spends everyday talking to her dead husband’s gravestone. Silas Dove, an HIV+ outsider, enters the cemetery to visit his recently deceased lover. What ensues is a hilarious and heart-warming quest to find a reason to live beyond simply living tired.

The Home
by Jami O’Brien
directed by Brendan Hughes
July 23-26 and July 29-August 2

Regina wants to be a stage director. Just before she moves to New York City, her father disappears. She is left to take care of her violent, hypochondriac mother who believes a banshee is in the house, her sister who hasn’t left the couch in nine years, and the boy next door who moves in because he’s afraid his stepfather wants to kill him. Funny and poignant, The Home culminates in an emotional whirlwind, leaving us wondering whether we should laugh or cry.

Leah's Train
by Karen Hartman
directed by Alice Rebecca Moore
August 6-9 and August 12-16

Three women. Three generations. Three moments in history collide. Leah, age 12, flees the pogroms in 1913 Russia. Hannah, age 50, escapes an unhappy marriage in present-day America. Ruth, age 28, searches for meaning in the aftermath of a failed relationship. Each woman boards a different train in a different world, but inexplicably and miraculously, meet in a freezing cold, dilapidated baggage car. Grandmother, mother and daughter come face to face, drawing the strength they need from each other and the inspiration they crave.
