The New Haven Book Bank is giving us free books to send home with your kids! This should help them to read a lot more. As encouragement, Book Bingo!
After the first or second session, help your Little Bud pick out a book
that you think looks about their reading level and interest type. Send them
home with that and a Book Sheet (we'll have lots of those at Slifka.) Remember they keep a book at home and a book in the Summer Buds Library at Slifka.
Ask them about how it's going at the next session. It's not a quiz, it's a chat. They'll probably want to tell you all about it. This part of the program has to come at their own initiative.
When they finish the book, they should bring back the Book Sheet. (If your kid loses things often, put the Book Sheet IN their notebook.) In exchange for the Book Sheet, give them a sticker. They get to pick whichever sticker they want. This is the fun part. Now help them to put the sticker in the right quadrant. The genres are purposefully vague.
Once they get their first diagonal, row, or column, come find me. I'll
have a prize for them. Repeat for each row, diagonal, or column completed.
Anybody that fills out their entire Book Bingo Board will get a slightly
larger prize. The prizes should just be a motivator and give the kids something to show off to their friends but should not actually be the point of the outside reading. The prizes are pretty dinky. It's the thought that counts.
