Prerequisite: ITAL 115 (Elementary Italian) or equivalent

Open to Yale students only. An intensive "at-home-and-abroad" course designed for second-year Italian students, combining language study at the intermediate level with an exploration of Italian literature, film, and culture. Students complete the equivalent of one term of intermediate Italian during the three weeks at Yale, followed by the equivalent of one term of intermediate Italian during the five weeks in Italy. The second half of the course allows students to put their language skills into practice, and provides for trips and cultural encounters in the Tuscany region. Students are responsible for all travel expenses to and from Siena, room and board costs in Italy, and any other expenses beyond tuition. Application deadline: April 1, 2008. Enrollment is limited. Jewish Italy - COURSE CLOSED

Prerequisite: ITAL 131b or equivalent

An exploration of Italian culture through the lens of Italy's oldest minority, Italian Jews. Examination of key texts, movies, and representations of the Jewish Italy in Italian literature and film. Guided tours of historically and culturally significant sites in Tuscany (Siena, Florence, Pitigliano), Venice, and Rome. Readings include novels, short stories, and poems by Giorgio Bassani, Natalia Ginzburg, Carlo Levi, Primo Levi, and Umberto Saba. Films include Life Is Beautiful, The Truce, Unfair Competition, and The Garden of the Finzi-Continis. Students are responsible for all travel expenses to and from Siena, costs of room and board, and all other expenses beyond tuition. Application deadline: April 1, 2008. Enrollment limited.
