Frequently Asked Questions

Who may apply for this program?
Any fine arts or liberal arts student in good academic standing at any institution may apply. Yale and non-Yale students are encouraged to apply. All applicants must have finished one year of college and be at least 18 years of age at the start of the program. All students are expected to comply with Yale Summer Session and Yale University policy. Please see page 40 of the Study Abroad Handbook for details.

I'm not an art major and I've never taken a studio art class, may I apply?
Yes. This program is intended for both experienced and non experienced students.

What will the program cover?
During your contact with Robert Reed, these questions along with information regarding program content, portfolios and program expectations will be discussed.

If I am not a Yale Student, how much transfer credit will I receive upon successful completion of the course?
Non-Yale students should consult their respective institutions for specific credit transfer information.

Will I be able to take French language or any other course during the session?
The ISS instruction is in English and because the program's unusually intensive nature requires considerable student commitment, no other courses are offered. While this is unlike programs that include some language training, the environment of Pont-Aven and your host family will offer an opportunity to learn some conversational French.

Will I be able to travel on the weekends?
During previous sessions of this program students have planned to travel together at the end of the program. ISS emphasizes studio practice in Pont-Aven. Students are encouraged to make plans to travel after the program.

How will I get from the airport to the host city?
Accompanied round trip ground transportation between Paris and Pont-Aven (with one night hotel stay in Paris on the last day of the program) is coordinated and staffed by the hosting institution.

Are there additional costs?
Students are responsible for the program fee, round-trip airfare, three evening meals per week, all lunched and individual spending money. All program excursions are included in your tuition/room and board cost.

Should I bring art supplies?
All necessary materials will be supplied. If desired, you may want to bring a few of your favorite items. Do be concerned, however, about customs. In the past some supplies have been confiscated.

Is financial aid available?
The International Summer Award is available to eligible Yale College students. Academic year financial aid awards do not apply. See the Financial Information section on the Summer Session website for more details.

Non-Yale students should consult their respective financial aid offices for funding opportunities.
