Guide to the Course Listings

Course Information

Courses are listed in alphabetical order by subject. The three-digit number preceded by a subject code (e.g., ENGL S-114) is the department's summer course number. The five-digit number beginning with "30" differentiates individual courses and sections. Both number sequences must be used when entering course selections on the application form. The group number (roman numerals I–IV) represents the Yale College distributional group to which the course is assigned for the Class of 2008 and earlier classes. The two-digit codes L1–L5, QR, WR, HU, SC, and SO represent the Yale College distributional designations for the Class of 2009 and subsequent classes: foreign language levels 1–5, quantitative reasoning, writing, humanities and arts, science, and social science, respectively.

Some courses are listed in more than one department, e.g., Modern American Literature is both ENGL S-290 and AMST S-260. Students may register for the course in the department that best suits their academic needs; such courses may also count toward the major in each department.

Course Cancellation Policy

The Director reserves the right to cancel or close any course or to add other sections to the current offerings whenever enrollment so warrants. In unusual circumstances the Director may be obliged to change an announced instructor or modify the emphasis of a course. Students will be notified if a course is closed or canceled and asked to make another selection. If no suitable alternative is available, the student's enrollment will be canceled and any pre-paid tuition refunded.
