Application Procedures

Applications for Yale Summer Session 2008 are now closed. It is no longer possible to apply. We will welcome applications for 2009 beginning in January.

Students must complete the general application and the application for housing and meals on line. This process requires students to pay the application fee with a credit card. All other required documentation listed below (recommendations, transcripts, writing samples, test scores, etc.) must be submitted separately. Applications will not be considered complete and will not be processed until all supporting materials are received. Printed versions of the application forms will not be accepted.

Please see the calendar for application deadlines. Materials must be postmarked by the due date. Incomplete applications will not be processed.

Students are notified when their applications are complete. Applications for most programs are reviewed on a rolling basis, and students are notified in writing as soon as a decision has been made, usually within two to three weeks after the application is complete or by the published notification date. The application process is competitive; students are admitted based on academic qualifications. Decisions will not be given over the telephone.

International students should note that their application deadlines are earlier than those of U.S. citizens and permanent residents. This is to allow adequate time for the processing of student visas and the receipt of payments. Please be aware that the amount of time required for the processing of a visa varies from country to country and will take a minimum of three weeks. Yale Summer Session has no control over these processes.

Please read the following checklists closely for the requirements for your application type. You may have more than one set of requirements.

ALL APPLICANTS MUST SUBMIT

the online Application for Admission to Yale Summer Session
a nonrefundable application fee of $55, paid on line with a credit card. Wire transfers, cash, checks, or money orders are not accepted as payment for application fees. The application fee is waived for YSS alumni and summer counselors.

YALE GRADUATE STUDENTS MUST ALSO SUBMIT

if applying for a Summer Language Institute Fellowship, the application form for the fellowship, available at 55 Whitney Avenue, 4th floor, or on line through the Yale Graduate School Web site

NON-YALE COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS MUST ALSO SUBMIT

a current official transcript. Students who have been out of college for more than ten years may submit a resume or curriculum vitae in lieu of a transcript.

PRE-COLLEGE STUDENTS MUST ALSO SUBMIT

a current official transcript bearing a seal or signature
required for students in the U.S. only, a copy of SAT (preferred), ACT, or PSAT scores (original official report is not required). Please note: test scores cannot be issued electronically to Yale Summer Session by the testing agency.
two recommendations (using the forms available in PDF format) from teachers, guidance counselors, or academic advisers who know your work well and can speak to your potential for success in intensive college-level summer courses, especially in the subject areas for which you are applying
selection on the application form of two course credits in each session attending (if you will live on campus). See also rules on full-time study.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS MUST ALSO SUBMIT

a copy of the most recent TOEFL scores (original official report is not necessary). A minimum score of 600 on the paper-based test, 250 on the computer-based test, or 100 on the internet-based test is required.
OR
acceptable alternative evidence of English language proficiency, such as proof of attendance for at least four years at a secondary school where English is the primary language of instruction
if you are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, proof that you have sufficient financial resources to meet the tuition and living expenses of the summer program. Such proof can be either an original letter from your bank, stating specifically that you have sufficient resources to meet all expenses of the program, or an original letter from a scholarship organization that will pay your expenses.
If you are going to be supported by a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, your sponsor must complete an Affidavit of Support form (USCIS I-134) form accompanied by the financial document required of this form.
You will need two original versions of your financial documentation, one for the application and one to present to the embassy when you apply for a visa.

DRAMA APPLICANTS MUST ALSO SUBMIT

a resume of relevant experience
a recommendation from a drama teacher or theater professional (using the forms available in PDF format). For pre-college applicants, this recommendation should be one of the two recommendations required for application.

APPLICANTS TO COURSES IN WRITING MUST ALSO SUBMIT

a writing sample according to the requirements stated in each course description. Writing samples must be submitted in Microsoft Word format (.doc) via e-mail to summer.session@yale.edu. Completed applications must be received by April 1. Notification of the admission committee's decisions will be mailed on April 15. Applications postmarked after the deadline will be processed according to the regular Yale Summer Session application schedule on a space-available basis.

Acceptance to Yale Summer Session does not imply admission to any other school or program of Yale University. Enrollment in Yale Summer Session does not satisfy a term of residency in Yale College regardless of the number of credits earned.
