Costs and Funding

Q: How much does it cost to study abroad with Yale Summer Session?

A: Please check the specific program Web site for costs related to a course. Students can expect to pay between $6,000 and $10,000, depending on the number of credits and length of the course, location of the program, and local cost of living.

Q: Is financial aid available?

A: Yale undergraduates who qualify for financial aid during the academic year automatically qualify for the International Summer Award (ISA).

Q: Are other Yale scholarships available in the summer?

A: Yale students should check the Student Grants and Fellowships Database for further information about summer funding opportunities.

Q: How do I know if I qualify for an International Summer Award (ISA) and how much my award will be?

A: Please visit the ISA website to check your eligibility and to determine your funding level. All questions regarding eligibility, award amounts, how the award is disbursed, and timeline for payment should be directed to Carolyn Falls in Student Financial Services, the office that administers the ISA.

Q: How do I apply for an ISA if it is to be applied to a Summer Session course?

A: Students must apply for funding through the Student Grants and Fellowships Database on the IEFP website.

Q: Is there an application deadline for International Summer Award?

A: Students should apply for the ISA as soon as they have been accepted into a Yale Summer Session Study Abroad program. At the latest, they must submit the ISA application by the time final payment of tuition and fees is due, two weeks before the course begins. Check with Carolyn Falls in Student Financial Services for further information.

Q: I am receiving a 100-percent ISA. Why do I have to pay for some portion of the program?

A: Yale Summer Session submits a program budget estimate to Student Financial Services that is a best guess of how much the entire program will cost. The ISA is based on this estimate. Certain student expenses may be higher than what is estimated (e.g., plane ticket, local transportation, non-program meals).

Q: I am participating in an 8-week language course that begins at Yale. Does the ISA cover my housing cost in New Haven?

A: The ISA covers only expenses related to the overseas portion of the course. Housing in New Haven is not part of the award.

Q: I need a visa to go to the host country, but the program budget for my course does not include this cost. Am I responsible for this?

A: The budget estimate found on the program Web site includes only the visa cost for courses in which U.S. students are required to obtain a visa to enter the host country. A non-U.S. Yale student who is receiving an ISA and must obtain a visa to enter the host country should find out the visa cost and inform both the Summer Session Study Abroad Coordinator and Carolyn Falls of Student Financial Services. This cost will be added to the student's ISA budget.
