Saint Thomas More's Alternative Spring Break program provides undergraduates with an opportunity to spend part of their Spring Break serving economically disadvantaged communities outside of New Haven. Students travel together each year to serve with grassroots organizations all across the country that seek to eliminate substandard living conditions. By putting their faith into action, students are challenged to reevaluate their own role in perpetuating problems and to work together to fond solutions.
2003: L'Arche - Ottawa, Canada
In
March 2003, the alternative spring break program sent twelve
students to L'Arche, a community for the disabled in Ottawa,
Canada. Students lived and worked in the community; their
activities ranged from sprucing up the physical plant to working
directly with the L'Arche community members.
L'Arche was founded in France in 1964 by
Jean Vanier. Today, there are 103 communities throughout the
world. Its primary mission is "to live in community with
the developmentally disabled while providing care in family
atmosphere."
2004: Heifer Project International’s Overlook Farm – Rutland, MA
Last year saw a team of STM’ers take off to spend a week living and working on a REAL farm, milking cows, caring for pigs, sheep, llamas and many other animals! Organic gardens, woodlands, pasture and more than 20 species of farm animals provided hands-on opportunities for participants to get involved in the work of the farm as well as providing a peaceful rural setting to discuss and explore solutions to poverty and hunger.
