Samuel Johnson: Christian

2009 marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of Samuel Johnson, the leading literary figure of 18th century Britain, (the Age of Johnson). Our lecture focuses on Johnson's Christian faith as a context for appreciating his work.

Saint Thomas More Chapel is pleased to welcome Rev. Alvaro Ribeiro, S.J. to deliver the 2009 More House Lecture, entitled "Samuel Johnson: Christian" on Monday April 20, 2009 at 4:30pm.

The More House Lecture has been an annual event since 1962 where Rev. John Courtney Murray, S.J., delivered the inaugural lecture: The Problem of God. Since that time distinguished theologians have spoken on topics of christology, ecclesiology, social justice, literature and spirituality to advance Catholic intellectual discourse on the campus of Yale University.

Alvaro Ribeiro S.J. is an Associate Professor of English. He is an expert in Shakespeare; 17th and 18th century British literature and culture; analytical bibliography and textual criticism; music history; and theology and literature.

He earned his DPhil from Oxford University, MDiv, STL from Weston Jesuit School of Theology and BA from the University of Hong Kong.

Recent Ribeiro publications include: Editor of Tradition in Transition: Women Writers, Marginal Texts, and the Eighteenth-Century Canon (Oxford: Clarendon, 1996); editor of The Letters of Dr Charles Burney, Volume I: 1751-1784 (Oxford: Clarendon, 1991); editor (with René Wellek) of Evidence in Literary Scholarship (Oxford: Clarendon, 1979).

Ribeiro teaches courses on Shakespeare; the "Long" Eighteenth Century, particularly Samuel Johnson and his Circle; and the Man Booker Prize for Fiction.
