Areas of interest: Spanish literature of the Renaissance and late Middle Ages, Jurisprudence as a factor in literary creation, Hermetic and Neoplatonic thought in XV-XVI century Spain and Italy. 

Publications include: Law and History in Cervantes' Don Quixote (Toronto, University of Toronto Press, forthcoming 2012); El Corpus Hermeticum y tres poetas españoles: Francisco de Aldana, San Juan de la Cruz y fray Luis de León (Newark, DE: Juan de la Cuesta, 2007); articles on Cervantes, Italian historian Paolo Giovio and Spanish jurist Gaspar de Baeza; Cervantes' Don Quijote as legal commentary; Hermetic lexicon and Neostoic resonance in the verse works of San Juan de la Cruz and Francisco de Aldana, and the legal age of reason as a factor in the Cantar de mío Cid's "niña de nuef años."

Byrne is working on a study of Marsilio Ficino and Neoplatonism in Spanish letters of the late XV and XVI centuries.
