Letter from the Chair
Dear Alumni and Friends:
Greetings!
Yale Sociology is delighted to be welcoming two new senior faculty members, Nicholas Christakis and Frederick Wherry, to the department this coming academic year.
See http://www.yale.edu/sociology for more information, as well as news of faculty and student achievements. Most recently, Elijah Anderson, William K. Lanman Professor of Sociology, has received the prestigious Cox-Johnson-Frazier Award from the American Sociological Association.
It's exciting to be beginning the new year on such a strong footing.
You will also have heard the news that President Rick Levin is stepping down from, and Provost Peter Salovey acceding to, Yale's presidency this coming July 1. http://news.yale.edu/2012/11/08/yale-provost-peter-salovey-be-university-s-next-president. Yale Sociology is delighted to report that Professor Salovey now holds a courtesy appointment in the department.
If you haven't had a chance to peruse the last (2012) issue of the Yale Journal of Sociology, give it a try at: http://www.yale.edu/sociology/yjs.html Hot off the presses, it includes several revised article-length senior theses of very high quality and a sampler of outstanding work by other scholars affiliated with the department. The YJS is available via EBSCO but can always be found on the department website as well. Enjoy!
For those of you who haven't checked out the campus lately, I should mention that the Sociology department is occupying new quarters. Faculty and some core staff are now located in the refurbished 493 College, a beautiful building in the heart of campus, while our research Centers and their staff, our graduate students, post docs and visitors occupy two adjoining houses down the road, close by the Yale Whale, at 204 and 210 Prospect Street. Ultimately the department will locate somewhere where we will all be together, but meanwhile, amidst Yale's ongoing construction projects, we count ourselves very lucky to be in such pleasant surroundings.
So now ... please tell us more about you. The department would love to hear more of your activities and plans. News and contact information can be sent to Kim Kuzina at Kimberly.kuzina@yale.edu. Kim also keeps the department's Facebook page, which I invite you to check out when you have a moment.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Happy 2013,
Julia Adams,
Professor of Sociology and in International and Area Studies
