About S.M.H.A.C.Students of Mixed Heritage and Culture was started in its most current incarnation as a venue for those of mixed racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds who did not feel that their experience had been accurately represented in Yale’s other cultural groups; to provide a venue for a more open discussion of race without the limiting aspect of racial signifiers. It is increasingly becoming evident that traditionally drawn racial distinctions, in terms of identity and the part played by each person in society, are anachronistic in a world in which the most powerful man in the world is multiracial and proud of it. Students of Mixed Heritage and Culture believes that in order for discussions of race to be effective and achieve any real understanding between the races, that the discussion must transcend racial barriers like our culture is so quickly doing. S.M.H.A.C. was reformed in the spring of 2008 with the collective goal of fostering education and open and frank discussions of race, especially among those who otherwise may not participate in said discussion. S.M.H.A.C. prides itself in welcoming all members, many of whom have never discussed or seriously considered race before. All are welcome: S.M.H.A.C. intends to provide an alternative venue for the discussion of race at Yale, directed not by a shared racial identity, but by a shared racial awareness. S.M.H.A.C. represents the numerous backgrounds and identities embodied on the Yale campus. |
