Welcome!

Students of Mixed Heritage and Culture, SMHAC, is designed to create a comfortable setting where students can relate on issues of mixed heritage, interracial dating, transracial adoptions, and exposure to multiple cultures. SMHAC is a campus organization, which instead of defining and placing "mixed" students into narrow categories, tries to break down barriers and claim for each member the right of self-definition. SMHAC provides a space for those interested in mixed heritage issues to express their concerns and interests to each other and the Yale community at large. SMHAC seeks to increase community awareness of issues facing students of mixed heritage while celebrating the role of people of mixed heritage within our increasingly multicultural student body and society. SMHAC hopes to foster greater campus awareness of mixed heritage issues by sponsoring various events such as films, lectures, open forums, workshops, and general meetings.

Image Description:

Kevin--Sansei & African American--an authentic strip kimono, ripped at both side seams to evoke an African robe. The garment reflects Kevin's self image as integrated, whole, neither Japanese American nor African American. Possibly because in the African American community where he lives, he is seen as Asian, and in an Eurocentric mainstream he is seen as black.
