Connecticut has no adequate bussing service for family members of prisoners. The Department of Corrections provides no service and the non-profit Families in Crisis has discontinued their service from New Haven. The lack of public transportation throughout the state means that there is no way for many family members without cars to see their loved ones in prison.
It is not only important for family members to be able to visit their loved ones, but visits are important for the rehabilitation of prisoners.
SLAM is currently considering helping to set up a program to take family members to different prisons throughout the state. SLAM also is looking into campaigns to get the state to provide this important service to its citizens. SLAM is working with A Different Perspective, Inc. towards both of these goals.
