During the Clinic, Bapak Waleed introduced participants to some basic ideas in self-defense and awareness. He lectured on, demonstrated, and taught some basic movements which are highly effective in avoiding and blocking oncoming attacks. He led the participants in basic stepping patterns and also in the basic hand movements used to block both punches and kicks. He gave participants several opportunities to pair off and practice some of the stepping and blocking positions with each other, reminding them that all of the movements are done while in constant motion, never while simply standing still. The emphasis during the Clinic was not on techniques, as many may be used to, but rather on continuous and cyclic motion combined with fluidity, balance and coordination. |

Throughout the Clinic, Bapak Waleed emphasized that there were many more levels to the ‘silat training’ which he was introducing to the class. One key to effective Self-Defense is to respond, not react, and to act on sensitivity rather than impulse. In order to do that, a person must build up good habits in their movements, so that when responding from habit, he or she is able to move in the right direction, at the right time, and in the proper position to effectively diffuse a dangerous situation. He emphasized the importance of balance and the coordination of the hand and feet movements. The key, he explained, is to move continuously and unpredictably. People think and see in a linear fashion, and so it is essential that we learn to move on angles rather than on straight lines in order to more effectively defend ourselves. |
|
Bapak Waleed stressed to the participants and those present the importance of maintaining a constant awareness throughout the cycles in their training and execution of the movements so that, as they encounter the unknown, they do so with greater level of sensitivity and awareness throughout. He advised them to maintain constant awareness and consciousness of their surroundings and an understanding of their own neighborhood, along with the various dangers it might present at different times of the day, the week, and the year. Building awareness and sensitivity is all part of the ‘silat training,’ so that one learns to sense danger before it happens, and can feel things without necessarily seeing them. These aspects of the training all take time to develop, and Bapak advised the students to practice what they had learned with consistency on an ongoing basis. Bapak Waleed further delved into the possibilities and importance of utilizing meditative states and stepping patterns to increase a greater sensitivity and state of awareness. In doing so he introduced the class to specific breathing patterns as well. |
|
Several of the participants had experience in various other arts, including karate, aikido, tai chi, jujitsu, and muay thai, but regardless walked away with an appreciation for the manner in which Bapak Waleed led the Clinics, and a realization that the movements and system they had just glimpsed was unique in its own right, much different than the other systems they had been used to practicing. Many inquired into the possibility of training with Bapak Waleed on an ongoing basis, and were interested in learning more about the systems of Silat, the basis from which Bapak taught Self-Defense & Awareness. |

Program Brief Description
Leonardo Stoute "Bapak Waleed", of the International Silat Federation
of America, will guide participants in 'silat training' that develop skills for Self-Defense, methods for Self-Awareness, and a means by which to approach Self-Realization.
Come learn about an effective and practical self defense system (Silat Tuo) which can show you how, when and what to do now, using proper applications to be able to handle any physical confrontation...Learn how to block, defend, avoid, escape, strike, attack and overcome from the perspective and application of Indonesian Martial Arts...(NOTE: this is NOT karate!)
Bapak Waleed is a world renowned expert in the Sacred Arts of Silat Tuo, which focus on balance, coordination, and consciousness in motion to connect the body, mind, and spirit. While containing self-protection applications, Silat Tuo (and more specifically 'silat training'), concurrently teaches methodologies for healing oneself as well as others, respectively. In fact, healing of the body-mind-spirit, or perhaps better stated: "the balancing and fusion of the body-mind-spirit," is a necessary experience for silat practitioners. |

YSD Self Defense & Awareness Clinics
Historically, Silat Tuo is the ancient, cultural art and Pusaka (cultural heritage) of Indonesia, originating with the Minang People of West Sumatra. Silat is well known throughout Southeast Asia as a means to promote wellness with oneself and the community, as well as a definitive means to protect the community and oneself.
Clinics are non-sequential, meaning that it is NOT necessary to attend both days. Thus, one may attend either the Saturday or Sunday clinic, respectively. However, the clinics will surely compliment each other, whereby attending both days is encouraged when appropriate.
Enrollment is limited, so PLEASE RSVP by September 8, 2006 to reserve your space in the clinic. For more background information, visit
