About the SGS

The Sociology Graduate Student (SGS) Organization at Yale is run for and by graduate students of the Sociology Department. It provides a conduit through which we collectively contribute to the life of our department, as well as a forum for representing our particular needs as we progress through the Ph.D. program. The SGS meets early in both the Fall and Spring semesters, and at other times as appropriate. Each year at least two members of the graduate student body are elected to serve as our representatives in departmental affairs. The primary duties of SGS officers are to attend monthly meetings of the Sociology Faculty, and where possible to liaise with administrators on issues affecting the graduate curriculum and student life. SGS committees work on activities such as information and resource consolidation, organizing department social events, and initiatives such as the mentor program for incoming graduate students. The mission of the SGS is to inclusively serve the interests of all students in residence, and to provide a means of mutual support for the duration of our graduate studies.

Further information:

The SGS can also help prospective students, and others who are seeking a graduate student perspective, with inquiries about the program.
