Application Guidelines for U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, and Canadian Residents

The following information will help you determine which applications and forms you will need to submit for financial aid consideration.

Please note that you will require Adobe Acrobat to view these forms. You can download it here.

Required Forms How to Apply/Where to Send
2008-2009 CSS Profile Application
(Available October 1)
Apply online at www.collegeboard.com. Yale’s CSS College Code is 3987. Yale receives your profile data electronically from CSS so you do not send copies or printouts of your application to Yale.
CSS Noncustodial Profile
(Only required if your parents are divorced, separated, or were never married.)
When you complete your Profile registration, the College Board will notify you that Yale requires the Noncustodial Profile. You will be sent an e-mail that details the requirement and you will be directed to share this e-mail with your noncustodial parent. This e-mail will contain a link to the Noncustodial Profile website as well as login instructions for your noncustodial parent.
CSS Business/Farm Supplement
(Only required if your parent(s) are self-employed or own a business.)
Download and submit directly to Student Financial Services.
CSS International Student Financial Aid Application
(Only required if your parents live abroad.)
Download and submit completed forms to Student Financial Services.
Parents’ 2007 tax return(s)

Custodial Parents: Submit signed copies of your parents’ 2007 federal tax returns (including all forms and schedules) to Student Financial Services.

Non custodial Parents: Your non custodial parent must send a copy of his/her 2007 tax return directly to Student Financial Services.

Imaging and Documentation Service (IDOC) Your family’s 2007 tax return should be submitted directly to the College Board’s Imaging and Documentation Service (IDOC) and not to Student Financial Services.

The IDOC Process

Beginning in February, and after you have submitted the CSS Profile Application, you will receive instructions from the College Board IDOC Service with a link to the IDOC web site to print your cover sheet and requirements document. You should mail the tax information to the College Board along with the completed and signed IDOC Cover Sheet. When the College Board receives your documents, they will electronically image and transmit your tax return statements to Yale Student Financial Services.

Signed Copies with Schedules and W2 Forms

  • You should sign the federal tax return copies, including all schedules and W2 forms. Yale does not require state tax returns. If you submit a TeleFile Tax Record, include the taxpayer’s signature and the six-digit IRS confirmation number on the bottom of the TeleFile Tax Record.
  • Parents and/or students who are not required to file a federal tax return must complete the appropriate Non-Tax Filer Statement as instructed in the IDOC Requirements Letter from the College Board IDOC Service. You must also include a completed Cover Sheet . To review your Requirements Document or to print a Cover Sheet, go to https://idoc.collegeboard.com/idoc/index.jsp.

IDOC Cover Sheet

The College Board will not process any information without an IDOC Cover Sheet. Beginning in February, you can print a duplicate IDOC Cover Sheet from the College Board’s website.

Confidentiality

Just as if you submitted the returns directly to Yale Student Financial Services, the confidentiality of your information is ensured. The College Board will electronically store your information in a secure environment and the paper copies of your documents will not be retained. Your IDOC submission will be communicated only to Yale Student Financial Services.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you will need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) after January 1, 2008.

While the FAFSA is not required in for the initial determination of your financial aid eligibility, it is helpful for us to have the document on file. We recommend that you complete the FAFSA after the family’s tax returns are completed, but no later than May 15, 2008. Since some state scholarship agencies use the FAFSA to evaluate eligibility, you should also make sure to meet any other applicable deadlines and use estimated information if necessary.

You can complete your FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. When you complete the FAFSA online, be sure that you and your parents obtain PIN numbers to sign electronically or submit the signature page as instructed. Yale’s FAFSA code is 001426.
