U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents Applying for Yale Scholarship

To ensure that students benefit from the full range of available financial aid, Yale requires the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, which is used to determine eligibility for federal and state grants as well as the low-interest Federal Direct Loan program.

Institutional aid is a substantial component of the financial aid package for most Yale College students, and the CSS Profile, along with FAFSA, is required to determine eligibility for Yale scholarships. The CSS Profile provides an automatic fee waiver for applicants from low-income families with few assets.

U.S. citizens and permanent residents applying for Yale Scholarship should submit signed copies of 2013 federal tax returns (including all W2 forms and schedules) to the College Board’s Imaging and Documentation Service (IDOC) and not to Yale Student Financial Services. Beginning in early February and after you have submitted the CSS Profile Application, you will receive a cover letter and cover sheet from the College Board that provides instructions for submitting federal tax returns. You should submit the tax returns to the College Board along with the completed cover sheet.

Canadian residents and international students along with U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents applying for a Federal Stafford Loan only should submit tax returns directly to Yale Student Financial Services.

2014–2015 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)*

Apply on line at fafsa.ed.gov.

Your taxable income must be verified by using the FAFSA IRS Data Retrieval Tool or by comparing it to an IRS tax return transcript. If you filed your federal tax return electronically at least two weeks prior to today or submitted your paper returns 6–8 weeks prior to today, you may be eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. We strongly encourage you to use this tool which allows both the parent and student to provide consent to the IRS to upload data from your federal tax returns at the time you complete your FAFSA. If you have not completed your tax return yet, you will not be able to use Data Retrieval until you do. However, you can complete the FAFSA using estimates and go back later to complete the Data Retrieval.

You will not be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Process and must submit an IRS Tax Transcript if any of the following applies:

  • You are married but filed separate returns for the 2013 tax year
  • Filed an amended 2013 tax return
  • Had a change in marital status after the end of the tax year on December 31, 2013

Signed Copies of Student's and Parents' 2013 Federal Tax Returns (including all W2 forms and schedules)

Mail to IDOC: You will send the tax return information, along with the required cover sheet, directly to the College Board’s Imaging and Documentation Service (IDOC). Read below for more information on IDOC.

The IDOC Process

Beginning in February, and after you have submitted the CSS Profile Application, you will receive instructions from the College Board IDOC Service with a link to the IDOC Web site to print your cover sheet and requirements document. You should mail the tax information to the College Board along with the completed and signed IDOC Cover Sheet. When the College Board receives your documents, they will electronically image and transmit your tax return statements to Yale Student Financial Services.

Signed Copies with Schedules and W2 Forms

  • You should sign the federal tax return copies, including all schedules and W2 forms. Yale does not require state tax returns. If you submit a TeleFile Tax Record, include the taxpayer's signature and the six-digit IRS confirmation number on the bottom of the TeleFile Tax Record.
  • If you and/or your parents are not required to file a federal tax return, you must complete the appropriate Non–Tax Filer Statement as instructed in the IDOC Requirements Letter from the College Board IDOC Service. You must also include a completed Cover Sheet. To review your Requirements Document or to print a Cover Sheet, go to the College Board's IDOC Web site.
  • If your parents own a business or farm, you must submit signed copies of the completed business tax return, including all schedules.

IDOC Cover Sheet

The College Board will not process any information without an IDOC Cover Sheet. Beginning in February, you can print a duplicate IDOC Cover Sheet from the College Board's IDOC Web site.

Confidentiality

Just as if you submitted the returns directly to Yale Student Financial Services, the confidentiality of your information is ensured. The College Board will electronically store your information in a secure environment and the paper copies of your documents will not be retained. Your IDOC submission will be communicated only to Yale Student Financial Services.

CSS Noncustodial Profile
(if required)
If your parents are divorced, separated, or never married, your noncustodial parent must complete the 2014–2015 online Noncustodial Profile. Applicants will receive a College Board e-mail with instructions regarding the Profile.
 
Submit 2013 tax returns and W2 forms of your noncustodial parent directly to Student Financial Services.
IRS Filing Extension
Form 4868

(if applicable)
If your parents have secured an extension to file a tax return at a later date, submit IRS Form 4868 along with parent W2 wage statement(s) and a signed draft of the 2013 tax return to Student Financial Services. As soon as the 2013 tax forms are complete, submit all required forms to IDOC.
Bio Questionnaire: Application Supplement This form allows the university to match students with donors and designees of endowed funds. Please submit on line.

*Residents of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, or Vermont must apply for a State Grant by completing the FAFSA and submitting any other information that their state agencies require by the states' deadline dates. Students who are eligible to receive state funding but do not receive it due to incomplete or late application materials will not receive Yale funds to cover the amount of state funding they would have received.

Timeline

The tables below list the filing dates and award notification dates for 2014–2015. Keep in mind that term bills for the 2014–2015 academic year go out on July 1 for the Fall 2014 semester (due date August 1) and November 1 for the Spring 2014 semester (due date December 1). In order to ensure that your financial aid is shown on your bill and to avoid late fee charges, you must complete your application by one of the application filing dates listed below.

To make Student Financial Services aware of special circumstances that are not reflected on the financial aid applications, you should submit a description on a separate sheet (along with any applicable documentation) to Student Financial Services.
