Campus safety is the primary job of the University Police Department and University Security Programs but students and visitors have a role to play as well. The University Police Department, with 80 sworn officers, provides the kind of police services typically found in all urban communities. The University Security Programs Department, with a staff of 80 security officers, is responsible for the physical security of Yale’s buildings, including residence halls.

Police Services

The Yale University Police Department is a full service police agency. University Police officers are armed and have full police powers, including the authority to make arrests throughout the City of New Haven. Headquarters is located at 101 Ashmun Street.

Security Blue Phones

Approximately 250 exterior phones are strategically located
throughout the campus and are readily identified at night
by blue lights hanging above or near them. The phones are
equipped with red emergency buttons for direct connection to the University Police for police, fire, or medical emergencies and a keypad for dialing any campus number.

Security Programs Services

Yale University employs a staff of trained Security Officers who work under the direction of University Security Programs. Easily identified by their uniforms of navy blue slacks, and white shirts with university patch and ID, Security Officers patrol campus 24 hours per day and perform a variety of services including those detailed below.

Getting Around: 2-WALK (2-9255)
One of the most popular services is the Escort Service. You may request an escort directly by calling 432-WALK (432-9255). Our security officer will walk you to and from any point on campus 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Security Personnel carry two-way radios and are in continuous contact with the Central Alarm Station at 100 Church Street South.

Security Dispatch Minibus
(nighttime) 432-6330
Security Dispatch Minibuses run from 6:00 pm to 7:30 am Monday through Sunday (seven nights a week). This service runs on a scheduled route around the campus and also takes dispatched calls for off-route pickups. From 1:00 am to 7:30 am service is available on call-in basis only. Yale University Bus Services

The Parking and Transit Services Department, 155 Whitney Avenue (432-9790) is responsible for bus service provided to the Yale community via the Yale Shuttle Bus (daytime), and the Special Services Van.

Daytime Shuttle Bus
The daytime shuttle operates from 7:20 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday. The shuttle operates on a convenient schedule for university staff and students circling campus routes that includes university buildings, residential buildings and parking lots. Special Services Van 432-2788
Yale Transit operates a Special Services Van which transports members of the Yale community who are permanently or temporarily disabled 24 hours a day Monday through Friday, and on Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 pm to 7:30 am. Passengers are picked up on request and transported within the boundaries. There is no daytime service on weekends.
