Prizes for High Scholarship or Character

The following prizes are listed in alphabetical order. Please consult the Yale College Dean’s Office for further information about these awards. When prizes are noted below as being awarded by the Council of Masters, that office may be consulted directly.

F. WILDER BELLAMY, JR., MEMORIAL (1939). Friends of F. Wilder Bellamy, Jr., B.A. 1937. Given each year to a member of the Junior Class of Yale College whose high spirits, capacity for enjoyment, integrity, and loyalty exemplify the qualities for which F. Wilder Bellamy, Jr., is remembered. To be awarded by the Council of Masters.

GORDON BROWN MEMORIAL (1913). Classmates in memory of Francis Gordon Brown, B.A. 1901. For a junior who most closely approaches the standard of good scholarship and character set by Francis Gordon Brown.

DAVID EVERETT CHANTLER (1960). Mrs. Frederick J. Robinson in memory of her brother, David Everett Chantler, B.A. 1910. For the senior who throughout his/her college career has best exemplified the qualities of courage, strength of character, and high moral purpose which were characteristic of the life of David Everett Chantler. To be awarded by the Council of Masters.

RUSSELL HENRY CHITTENDEN (1926). Professor Russell H. Chittenden, Ph.B. 1875. Awarded to the graduating senior majoring in the natural sciences or in mathematics who ranks highest in scholarship.

GORDON GRAND FELLOWSHIP (1938) A post-baccalaureate award established to honor Gordon Grand, Jr., a distinguished member of the Yale College Class of 1938. The fellowship will support a year (nine to twelve months) of travel, research, or work abroad or in the United States. Eligible are members of the Class of 2005 who will have received a Yale bachelor's degree by September, 2005. The recipient of the Gordon Grand Fellowship is expected to submit a mid-year and final report to the Gordon Grand Fellowship Committee. JAMES A. HAAS (1992). James A. Haas, B.A. 1989. Awarded to that member of the senior class in Yale College whose breadth of intellectual achievement, strength of character, and fundamental humanity shall be adjudged by the faculty to have provided leadership for his/her fellow students, inspiring in them a love of learning and concern for others.

ARTHUR TWINING HADLEY (1902). Arthur Twining Hadley, B.A. 1876, and President of Yale 1899-1921. Awarded to the graduating senior majoring in the social sciences who ranks highest in scholarship.

HART LYMAN (1929). Katherine Lyman Steele, Marion Lyman Stebbins, and Charlotte P. Lyman in memory of Hart Lyman, B.A. 1873. Awarded to a junior for character and achievement.

WILLIAM H. McKIM (1955). Friends and classmates in memory of William H. McKim, Class of 1954. For a senior majoring in political science, economics, history, or a related field (e.g., Russian Studies), who has shown improvement in his or her academic standing in upper-class years and who has made a significant contribution in one or more activities outside the classroom. To be awarded by the Council of Masters.

JOHN C. SCHROEDER AWARD (1949). William C. Ford, B.S. 1948. For a member of the Junior Class who, in the opinion of the Committee, “will find his or her place and play a part in the good labor of the world,” with an emphasis on the qualities of altruism and social service; the award is intended to honor contribution to the good life of the residential college community, and to express confidence in the recipient’s later contribution to the common good. JOSEPH LENTILHON SELDEN MEMORIAL (1953). Given each year to a member of the Junior Class whose verve, idealism, and constructive interest in music and the humanities exemplify those qualities for which Joseph Lentilhon Selden, B.A. 1949, is remembered. In recent years this award has gone to a student especially notable for his or her contribution in the field of music. To be awarded by the Council of Masters.

ALPHEUS HENRY SNOW (1922). Mrs. Snow in memory of her husband, Alpheus H. Snow, B.A. 1879. For the senior who, through the combination of intellectual achievement, character, and personality, shall be adjudged by the faculty to have done most for Yale by inspiring classmates with an admiration for scholarship.

LOUIS SUDLER PRIZE IN THE PERFORMING AND CREATIVE ARTS (1980). Awarded annually to the graduating senior who, in the opinion of the faculty, has demonstrated excellence or the highest standards of proficiency in performance or execution or in the field of composition in one of the following general areas: music, theater, painting, sculpture, design, architecture, photography, or film.

ROOSEVELT L. THOMPSON PRIZE (1984). Friends and classmates in memory of Roosevelt L. Thompson, B.A. 1984. The recipient should be outstanding in the Senior Class for dedication to public service--service to “the team, the college, the community,” and should exemplify great human warmth, commitment to fairness, compassion for all people, and the promise of moral leadership in the public sphere. To be awarded by the Council of Masters.

WARREN MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOLARSHIP (1922). Julia A. Archibald, wife of Rev. Andres W. Archibald, B.D. 1876, in memory of her parents, Charles Austin and Emeline Curtis Warren of New Haven. Awarded to the graduating senior majoring in the humanities who ranks highest in scholarship.

YALE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING ASSOCIATION HIGH SCHOLARSHIP (1946). For juniors and seniors majoring in the sciences or engineering.

YALE UNIVERSITY HEALTH SERVICES AWARD (1998). Awarded to the graduating senior who demonstrates outstanding commitment and achievement in the field of health education and health promotion. Nominations should be submitted to the Health Services Executive Committee.
