Subject: Flu Alert to Yale STUDENTS who have a pre-existing or chronic illness

Everyone is aware that flu has already hit the Yale campus.

Persons who have PRE-EXISTING, UNDERLYING SERIOUS MEDICAL CONDITIONS are at increased risk of suffering COMPLICATIONS if they come down with the novel H1N1 influenza virus.

IF YOU CURRENTLY HAVE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING MEDICAL CONDITIONS:

  • ASTHMA that requires daily use of a steroid inhaler or has required emergency care as a teenager or adult (but NOT simple exercise associated asthma or mild asthma)
  • Other LUNG CONDITIONS (such as Cystic Fibrosis or Emphysema)
  • HEART CONDITIONS (other than High Blood Pressure)
  • CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE
  • CHRONIC LIVER DISEASE
  • BLOOD CONDITIONS (such as Sickle Cell Disease)
  • NEURO-MUSCULAR CONDITIONS (such as M.S., Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy)
  • DIABETES and other metabolic conditions
  • PREGNANCY, even if otherwise healthy
  • AUTO-IMMUNE CONDITIONS (such as HIV, recent Chemotherapy for cancer, or treatment with powerful medications for Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's Disease)
  • Recent STEROID TREATMENT (Prednisone )
  • Long Term ASPIRIN therapy

it is VERY IMPORTANT that you contact Yale University Health Services FLU HOTLINE 1-866-924-YALE ( 1-866-924-9253) or STUDENT MEDICINE (203-432-0312) in the event that you have symptoms of acute influenza:

  • FEVER GREATER THAN 100.0 F or 37.8 C
  • MUSCLE ACHES/ BODY ACHES 
  • and/or COUGH, SORE THROAT, RUNNY NOSE, FATIGUE, CHILLS, HEADACHE, VOMITING OR DIARRHEA
  • or if you have close contact (a roommate or intimate partner) with a suspected case of the flu
If any of the above conditions apply to you, call Yale University Health Services if you develop signs of the flu or if you are in close contact with someone who has flu symptoms.
