What to Do in an Emergency

Students with Disabilities

  1. Plan in Advance
    1. Individuals who need assistance during an evacuation, even temporarily (due to broken leg, illness, medications, etc.) should plan in advance. It is important to be aware of your own capabilities and limitations.
    2. Notify the Director of the Resource Office on Disabilities (203-432-2325) if you use a particular building on a regular basis and/or are a student resident. Locate the area of refuge in the building to seek in an emergency.
    3. Program the University’s emergency phone number in your cell phone: 203-432-4400. If CALLING from a campus Blue Phone, push the red button to identify where you are located.

  2. Building Evacuation (Fire or Hazardous Materials Emergency, Bomb Threat, etc.)
    1. Exit the building immediately using the most direct route.
    2. If smoke, heat or flames block your exit routes, stay in the room with the door closed. Place a rolled towel underneath the door. Signal for help by waving a brightly colored cloth or shining a flashlight at the window. If there is a telephone in the room, CALL the fire department and let them know your exact location inside the home.
    3. If unable to evacuate on your own, ask for assistance to the nearest enclosed exit stair or remain in your room. CALL 203-432-4400 or hit red button on campus Blue Phone.
    4. Ask someone leaving the building to notify emergency responders of your locations.
