What to Do in an Emergency
Active Shooter
- In the event of a shooting incident on campus, the Yale Alert system would be used to notify the campus community. Public address systems and external loud speakers could also be used depending on the nature of the situation. The Yale Police have a Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) that is trained and equipped to respond. Please be prepared to follow the instructions communicated on the Yale Alert system or directly from the police.
- If You Are A Witness Of An Event Like This:
- Seek safe shelter
- Call 911 is safely
- Report location and all other information that you have to assist the police.
- Await further instructions from authorities
- If An Active Shooter Is Outside Your Building:
- Proceed to a room that can be locked, shut off lights and lock all windows, close shades and stay out of sight.
- One person in the room should call 911 or 432-4400
- Do not leave until given instructions to do so by police.
- If An Active Shooter Is In The Same Building As You:
- If the room that you are in can be locked, follow the same procedures listed above.
- If your room cannot be locked, determine if there is a nearby location that can be reached safely and then secured. If you can do so safely, exit the building. If you must remain in a room that cannot be locked, attempt to barricade the door, stay away from doors and windows and lie on the floor.
- If An Active Shooter Enters Your Office Or Classroom:
- Dial 911 if possible and give location. If you cannot speak, leave the line open so the police can listen to what is taking place.
- If you cannot escape, attempt to negotiate with the shooter. ONLY AS A LAST RESORT SHOULD YOU ATTEMPT TO OVERPOWER THE SHOOTER WITH FORCE.
- If the shooter leaves the area, remain in place, lock or barricade the door, and call 911 or 432-4400 to provide information to police.
