What to Do in an Emergency

Hazardous Material Emergency

  1. Catastrophic Emergencies
    1. Call Police at 432-4400 or
    2. Press the red button on a blue phone
    3. What to be prepared to report and do to assist:
      1. Alert others nearby of the problem, and safely leave the immediate area
      2. Provide address and location
      3. Identify the best entrance for responders
      4. Have someone meet responders at entrance
      5. Explain the nature and extent of emergency
      6. Give your name and the number you are calling from
    4. Do not hang up until instructed to do so

  2. Minor Chemical Spills
    1. Call Environmental Health and Safety (EHS)
      785-3555 (regular business hours)
      432-440 (all other times)
    2. Alert people in immediate area of spill
    3. Increase ventilation in area of spill (open window, turn on hood)
    4. Avoid breathing vapors from spill.

  3. Radioactive Materials Spills
    1. STOP . . . . .what you are doing
      1. Do not panic
      2. Stay in the immediate area
      3. Collect your thoughts and keep calm
    2. PRESUME . . that you are contaminated
      1. Do not spread the contamination
      2. Do not make any unnecessary moves
      3. If feasible, check for skin contamination
    3. INFORM . ..others in the immediate area of the spill
      1. Have someone contact Radiation Safety
      2. during normal working hours: 785-3555
      3. after hours: 911 (Campus Police)
    4. LOCALIZE . . .the spilled material
      1. Estimate the extent of the spill
      2. Place absorbent material on the spill (wear gloves)
    5. LABEL . . .the area as contaminated
      1. Restrict individuals from entering or leaving the area
