What to Do in an Emergency
General Safety Notes/Plan Ahead
- Use common sense. Try not to walk alone or appear distracted by wearing headphones or talking on your cell phone.
- Trust your instincts. If something makes you uncomfortable or if you see suspicious behavior, you can contact the Yale Police from one of more than 400 Blue Phones on campus. Press the red button, which connects you directly with a Yale Police dispatcher.
- Do not carry or display large amounts of money or jewelry.
- Be careful with personal belongings. Keep money and jewelry hidden and preferably locked away.
- Do not leave valuables in common areas.
- Do not leave items within view in your car.
- Always lock car doors and purchase an anti-theft device.
- If you need to ask for help, ask someone you know or someone in authority.
- If approached by someone demanding money, do not resist.
- Turn over the money, then call the Yale Police immediately.
- Require identification from all service people.
- Never leave dorm, apartment, or office doors unlocked.
- Never hesitate to contact police if you have been a victim of a crime.
