What to Do in an Emergency

Signs of Life-Threatening Levels of Alcohol and/or Drug Intoxication

  1. Several indicators that an intoxicated person is in a life-threatening situation:
    1. The person’s breathing is very slow, and perhaps irregular;
    2. The person’s pulse is weak, or is either very slow or very fast;
    3. The person has passed out, or is asleep, and cannot be wakened or can only be slightly aroused for a few moments;
    4. The person has physical signs of a significant fall and /or head injury, cut or bruise, especially when combined with impaired consciousness or inability to bear weight;
    5. The person in vomiting
    6. The person’s fingernails are blue

  2. If any of these are evident, or if you are not sure call Yale Health Plan, on/off campus: 432-0123 for advice and urgent help or 911 if it appears to be a life-threatening situation.

  3. The University regards as unreasonable the expectation that roommates, suitemates, friends, or residential staff will take on health care responsibilities for other students, including in an instance of extreme intoxication. An alcohol or drug impaired student should never be left in residence with a friend, master or dean if they may need un-going care.
