What to Do in an Emergency
Building Evacuation
- Procedures
- In the event of a major fire, explosion, or other situation causing extensive property damage, the Yale Police, in coordination with the New Haven Fire Department, will respond to begin immediate evacuation. Staging areas for residential facilities have been identified and would be opened to accommodate residents as conditions permit.
- Individuals evacuated from a facility will be directed by University Police to the appropriate assembly area.
- Masters, Deans, or other University officials will collect the names of those present and determine the names of persons not at the assembly area.
- Evacuees will remain at the assembly area until they are either able to return or it is determined that they are to move to a relocation facility or to a different assembly area.
- When evacuating a building:
- Stay calm.
- Proceed to the nearest exit.
- Use alternate exit if primary exit is obstructed.
- Close doors behind you as you leave.
- Do not use elevators.
- Keep low to the floor if smoke is present.
- Proceed to your designated meeting place.
- DO NOT re-enter the building until emergency personnel declare it is safe to do so.
- If smoke, heat or flames block your exit routes, stay in the room with the door closed. Place a rolled towel underneath the door. Signal for help by waving a brightly colored cloth or shining a flashlight at the window. If there is a telephone in the room, CALL the fire department and let them know your exact location inside the home.
