What to Do in an Emergency

Bomb Threat

1. If you receive a bomb threat by telephone, here are some helpful things to keep in mind:
   1. Remain Calm. Try to obtain as much information as possible
   2. DO NOT put the caller on hold
   3. DO NOT attempt to transfer the call
   4. The person taking the call should immediately notify another staff person in the office, preferably while the caller is still on the line, asking them to contact the police if at all possible at 911 or 432-4400
   5. Pay attention to the caller and his/her words and speech:
      1. Does the caller have any distinguishing voice characteristics such as an accent, stuttering or mispronunciation?
      2. Is the caller angry, excited, irrational or agitated?
      3. Is the caller a man or woman, young, middle aged or old?
      4. If you have caller ID, note the phone number of the caller.
   6. Listen for background noises (traffic, train whistle, music, radio, TV, children, airplanes, etc).
   7. It is important to document all that you know and hear. This should include filling out the Bomb Threat Checklist below.
   8. Call the Yale Police at 911 or 432-4400
   9. Do not evacuate until told to do so by the Police

      4. What does it look like?
      5. Who placed the bomb?
      6. Why was the bomb placed?
      7. Where are you calling from?
   7. Description of Callers Voice:
      1. Young, Old, Middle Aged, Accent, Male, Female, Race, Background Noises, Remarks, etc..
