Stay Informed

Yale Alert

Yale ALERT can reach students, faculty, and staff with time-sensitive information during unforeseen events or emergencies using voice, e-mail, and/or text messaging. The University will use emergency contact numbers that have been registered with Yale.

  • Undergraduate students
    The number used will be the emergency contact telephone number entered during the class registration process via the Student Information System (SIS). Students may update this information by logging onto the system via http://www.yale.edu/sis/ and following the instructions.

  • Graduate and professional school students
    The number used will be the emergency contact telephone number entered into the student profile via the Student Information System (SIS). Students may update this information by logging onto the system via http://www.yale.edu/sis/ and following the instructions.

  • Faculty and staff
    The numbers used will be your home phone and a Yale ALERT cell phone number which you provide to your business office. Please keep your business manager informed of any changes in your contact information.

  • Parents
    Parents are encouraged to provide their emergency contact information. To sign up, students must add their parents’ contact information through the Student Information System (SIS). http://www.yale.edu/sis/

Crisis Communication

  • Blue Phones
    Over 400 exterior phones are strategically located throughout the campus and are readily identifiable at night by blue lights hanging above or near them. The phones are equipped with red emergency buttons for direct connection to the University Police Communications Center for police, fire, or medical emergencies. Each phone is also equipped with a keypad for dialing any campus number. http://www.yale.edu/police/crime.html#Emergency

    The University is also in the process of installing a total of 102 speakers for exterior broadcasting during an emergency. The installations will be completed by May 2009.

  • Fire Alarms and Public Address Systems
    34 of the University’s largest buildings are equipped with the ability to make voice announcements over the fire alarm system. For isolated emergencies involving these buildings, targeted announcements will be made over this system. A total of 183 buildings will have this capacity by December 2011.

  • Web Updates
    Front page and splashes: During an emergency, the front page of the University’s Web site, www.yale.edu, will include prominent links to important emergency information. In addition, see www.yale.edu/emergencymanagement for ongoing preparedness and planning information.

    The City of New Haven has purchased an emergency notification system to aid in getting important emergency information to City residents and businesses as quickly as possible when it is needed. Examples of notifications include weather-related alerts, evacuation instructions, and instructions related to City services such as street sweeping or snowplowing.
