As you know from recent emails, we are preparing for the possibility of increased cases of flu this fall. Although we hope that you will remain healthy throughout the semester, I wanted to let you know what to do if you get the flu.
As with regular colds and flu, any student who is mildly ill with H1N1 flu will be asked to remain in his or her room. As an extra precaution, those who are ill will have a daily checkup phone call from a senior staff person and regular visits or calls from a nurse. Meals will be delivered to your room. If you live close by and can return home to recuperate, we encourage you do so.
If your roommate has the flu, you will be encouraged to relocate to your common room, if possible. If you remain in the same room with a sick roommate, please be sure to take the precautionary measures of thorough and frequent hand washing and sanitizing, not sharing computer keyboards, and not drinking from the same container as your sick roommate.
Of course, any student who is seriously ill will be admitted to the infirmary at the Yale University Health Services (YUHS) or to the hospital. YUHS also will work with students with health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, cancer, or other situations, that may pose an additional risk to ensure that these individuals receive appropriate preventive care and/or treatment. If this applies to you, please talk to your primary care provider at YUHS.
A copy of the “Yale College Flu Guide” and other information is posted on the web at http://www.yale.edu/secretary/emergency/swineflu.html. Please refer to the website for suggestions for helping protect yourself against the flu. Most importantly, if you think you might have the flu, please call the YUHS “Flu Line” at 1-866-924-YALE (9253).
