Background
Indonesia,
as the largest country in Southeast Asia and arguably the most
pluralistic, is a perfect example of a society with a multi-cultural
identity experiencing a myriad of socio-political and economic
influences. This contemporary Indonesian society is struggling
to adapt to the democratic process whilst having to accommodate
the inherited unified state system.
Departing from a multitude of socio-political and economic aspects
of diversity emphasized in Indonesia's present multi-cultural
identity, the conference aims at mapping these different aspects
of Indonesian society into the context of the present day Indonesian
state system in order to explain how this political system accommodates
this unique plurality and complexity of identity.
In order to successfully address this intellectual challenge
imbedded in this concept the conference invites the participation
of a wide range of multi-disciplinary scholars both from Indonesia
as well as from overseas. The diversity of this approach will
allow the participants to reach a deeper insight in the underlying
theoretical, methodological concepts of issues important to
Indonesia today.
Yogyakarta as city of education and culture forms a miniature
model for the multicultural society of Indonesia and is therefore
ideal for this conference. This will enable the speakers of
the international conference to interact with participants from
all parts of Indonesia and will greatly enrich its contents.
