The Story of Pao /
Chuyen Cua Pao
Winner of Golden Kite Awards for
Best Film, Best Actress,
Best
Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography
Premiering at the Montreal World Film Festival in August 2006, Vietnam
director Ngo Quang Hai's first feature 'Pao's
Story'
(Chuyen Cua Pao)
was submitted as Vietnam's official selection. The movie is the
story of Pao, a young ethnic Hmong woman who sets
off to find her mother. The story develops the concept of love
from different points of view, both traditional and modern, and seeks
to share an intimate look at Vietnam and the Hmong people. The
magnificent mountain ranges of Northwest Vietnam, engulfed year-round
in an immense veil of fog, provide a rich cinematic setting for this
vivid and moving film.
The movie stars acclaimed Vietnamese actress, Do Thi Hai Yen, known for her roles
in "The Quiet American" (US), "Vertical Ray of the Sun" (France),
and "Song of the Stork" (Singapore) among other films.
Prior to the debut of "Pao's Story," director and screenwriter, Ngo Quang Hai collaborated in "The
Quiet American," "Vertical Ray of the Sun," "The Scent of Green
Papaya," and "Cyclo."
"......'Pao's Story' is a
contemplative....coming-of-age tale set among
the Hmong people, an ethnic minority indigenous to the mountains of
North Vietnam.... told through the eyes of (
Pao, played by) serenely beautiful Do Thi Hai Yen, star of "The Quiet
American" and
writer/director Ngo's wife....magnificent scenery, colorful costumes
and authentically exotic players.....a universal story about letting go
of resentments based on childhood memories, as multiple revelations
alter her perception of the past..... widescreen vistas and graceful
rhythms of a timeless rural existence, shepherded by an especially
beautiful woman.....(Ronnie Sheib, Variety.com)
