Huzir Sulaiman is a celebrated playwright and the joint artistic director of Singapore’s famed Checkpoint Theatre, which he co-founded in 2002. His plays are known for their political and social satire and have been staged in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, London, Berlin, and New York. His 14 plays include Atomic Jaya (1998), an internationally acclaimed parody that asks what would happen if Malaysia decided to build an atomic bomb. His work deals with a range of themes encompassing family trauma and reconciliation; speech, power, and censorship; and the subjectivity of history. Sulaiman also writes for film, television, and newspapers. He teaches playwriting at the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University and consulted on the redevelopment of the National Museum of Singapore.
