National Student Chapters Webinar
Student leaders from four universities have submitted short videos that focus on their chapters’ accomplishments during the Spring semester, and their advice to the members of recently-organized chapters on staying motivated, recruiting members, and working with school faculty and administration.
Students from the University of Texas at Austin will be reporting on the major success of their Campus Energy Report, and their recently passed student government resolution regarding energy efficiency. The group of graduate students will also touch upon ongoing plans to volunteer at local elementary and middle schools, as part of a K-12 STEM education theme for SEA’s chapters.
Students from Yale University will review the basics of setting up a chapter, Yale’s ongoing recycling initiative, and a major event held during the summer with Chris Mooney, co-author of Unscientific America. The group of graduate students will also speak of their plans for a Science Policy Career Trip in Washington DC in October and Communication Workshops planned for this coming year.
After a half hour of video presentations, chapter leaders will hold a question and answer session. Participants will be able to ask questions directly over the conference call service, or present their questions online within a chat room.
Following the student-run portion of the webinar, one of SEA’s founders and author of Sex, Drugs and DNA, Dr. Michael Stebbins, will discuss the major objectives of SEA, the influence and significance of a national coalition of science, engineering and mathematics students.
The event will commence with final words from student leaders, SEA staff and brief reminders of our upcoming programs such as the Campaign Training Workshop Series, our science policy wiki, the SHARP Network, and SEA’s virtual science policy internships and fellowships.
**Registration is needed to access the chat room where students can ask questions.
