2009-2010 Officers:

President

Ian Evans is currently serving as President of Yale's SEA chapter. His vision for SEA is to create an opportunity for the scientific community to become engaged in the broader dialogues of the political process. Ian is a graduate student in the Dept. of Genetics at Yale's School of Medicine. In the lab, Ian studies molecular oncology with Tian Xu. Outside the lab, he is interested in the regulatory framework surrounding the biopharma industry and how to efficiently bridge the gap between lab discoveries and viable technologies that benefit the general public. Ian received his B.S. in Molecular Cell Biology from California State University, Long Beach.

Vice-President & SEA Chapter Advisory Board (SEA CAB) Liason

Mary (Molly) Rorick is a PhD candidate in the Genetics Department carrying out research in the field of evolutionary theory. Her work consists of modeling biological systems and analyzing comparative sequence data to address questions about how biological systems function and evolve. In particular, she is interested in modularity, evolvability, and the evolutionary origins of highly conserved protein domains and amino acid repeats. She believes in the broad utility of the scientific process and in the importance of integrating the best available science into policy decisions. For these reasons she also believes that clear communication between the political and scientific worlds is essential and hopes to do her part to facilitate this cross-talk.

Public Relations

Griselda Zuccarino-Catania is a fourth year graduate student in the Immunobiology department, investigating functions for distinct subsets of memory B cells. She helped start the Yale Student Chapter of SEA and has served as its president for the previous two years. This year she will serve as the Public Relations officer, promoting the chapter and organizing exciting activities. She is interested in communication between scientists and the public. Griselda received her B.S. in Biotechnology from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

Media and Communications

Jessica (Jessie) McDonald is a fourth year Immunobiology Ph.D. student researching the mechanism of somatic hypermutation in B cells. An alumna of Haverford College, where she majored in English literature as well as molecular biology, Jessie is particularly concerned with how science journalism informs science policy and ways in which communication can serve as a catalyst for action.
