Ever been told it’s impossible to change the world? Consider the 1950s ad for Chesterfield cigarettes featuring crooner Perry Como, a “two pack a day man,” and a panel of medical experts declaring that Chesterfields don’t harm the throat. Much milder Chesterfield is best for you! The ad would be unthinkable today. Unthinkable because the world has changed. It was changed by scientists and advocates who teamed up to tell the truth about tobacco and the horrible toll it was taking on the public health. At the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale, we too are changing the world. We’re telling the public the truth about a toxic food environment and about the painful discrimination faced by obese people. We are telling that truth in all manner of traditional and emerging media. That is why Real Change 2006 is available in paper and electronic form. Our paper version is convenient, easy to carry on the train or to enclose in a letter to a friend. Pairing this with a pixel version allows us to share electronic media such as clips of Rudd faculty giving broadcast interviews and excerpts from academic papers that shine new light on the science of obesity. The Rudd Center is committed to maximizing its impact by making the best use of every available technology to reach a wide variety of audiences. That strategy is working. Director Kelly Brownell was named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by Time magazine in 2006, a clear demonstration of not only his personal effectiveness but the impact of the Rudd Center as a whole. Every day, requests come in from press seeking interviews, from policy makers who want to be guided by science and — most gratifying of all — from everyday people looking for ways that they can be agents of change in their own communities. At the close of our second year, the Center’s impact exceeds even our own expectations. That is because the world is hungry for the thing it needs most. Change. |
