The Navy offers students in their sophomore, junior or senior years the
opportunity to apply for the Bachelor’s Degree Completion Program (BDCP).
Those accepted receive a stipend and are guaranteed enry in to an Officer
Program, such as Navy Pilot, Naval Flight Officer, Civil Engineering
Officer, and others. Yale students majoring in Chemisty, computer science,
engineering, and mathematics can apply to the Navy’s Nuclear Power Officer
Program. Upon graduation, individuals attend Officer Candidate School and
then are commissioned.
The Marine Corps offers eligible Yale students various
paid summer training programs as well as financial assistance
opportunities during the academic year to pursue careers in the Marine
Corps. Freshmen and sophomores may be attend a six-week Platoon Leaders
Class during successive summers at Officer Candidate School. Juniors may
attend one ten-week course. These summer courses carry no future
obligation. Graduates may attend Officer Candidate School to obtain a
commission. Female students attend the Women Officer Candidates program,
which is similar to the Platoon Leaders Class and Officer Candidate
School. If you apply for and accept financial assistance while in school
you will incur a service obligation. Upon graduation from Yale, a
candidate who has successfully completed the Marine Corps training program
may choose to accept a commission as a Second Lieutenant with an active
duty requirement.
The armed forces offer other military educational assistance programs that may
benefit graduates of Yale College and those attending certain professional
schools at Yale. These programs offer students the opportunity to qualify
for financial aid to continue their education in fields considered vital
to the military. These include medicine, law, nursing and engineering.
Upon graduation, successful candidates receive an officer’s commission in
their chosen service and incur a service obligation.
