1. Lethal Yellowing Disease

Another environmental concern now occuring on the island which is not covered elsewhere in this web-page but which deserves mention is Lethal Yellowing Disease. This bacterial infection has killed palm trees throughout the Caribbean region and has recently been seen in Roatan. The illness caused the palms to turn yellow and then to drop all of its leaves. In some areas on the island resistant strains of palms have been planted and in others the living palms are being treated with antibiotics. Still, througout the remainder of the island, the effects of the disease are evident.
