Marshall Scholarships

Up to forty-four Marshall Scholarships are awarded annually to U.S. citizens for two years of study in any discipline, at either the undergraduate or graduate level, leading to the award of a British university degree.

The Rhodes Scholarship (U.S.)
Due noon, 8/15/2008
The Rhodes Scholarship Trust supports degree study for one or two years at the University of Oxford, with the possibility of renewal for a third year.

American Institute of Indian Studies Fellowships
Due 7/1/2008
Supports research in India and the establishment of formal affiliation with Indian universities and Indian research supervisors.  Applicants must be doctoral candidates whose research requires travel to India.  Up to 11 months of  support for dependants and language study includes: a stipend per month of Rs 32,200, research and travel allowance per month of Rs 13,800 and $70, a per dependent allowance per month of Rs 9,200, a 15% increase for fellows based in Bangalore, Chennai (Madras), Kolkata (Calcutta), Mumbai (Bombay) or New Delhi, and round-trip travel.

Fulbright Student Program Grants
Due 9/2008
The Fulbright Student Program strives to increase mutual understanding between people of the U.S. and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge, and skills.  All applicants must have a B.A. degree or equivalent prior to start of grant. Applications must be submitted to Assistant Dean Robert Harper-Mangels. Please contact Dean Harper-Mangels (robert.harper-mangels@yale.edu) for more information. Grant is typically around $15,000 - $17,000, but can vary greatly by country and award type.

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Grant
Due 10/2008
This grant is designed to contribute to the development and improvement of the study of modern foreign languages and area studies.  Applicants must be admitted to candidacy at time of tenure and must use the on-line application available via the Department of Education's E-grants site (http://e-grants.ed.gov/egWelcome.asp?APP=) to apply. You are strongly advised to contact Assistant Dean Robert Harper-Mangels (robert.harper-mangels@yale.edu) if you are interested in applying. The terms are from $18,000 - $70,000.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships
Due 10/2008
Supports scholars of outstanding merit and leadership potential for whom advanced study at Cambridge would be particularly appropriate.  Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a person's intellectual ability, leadership capacity and desire to use their knowledge to contribute to society throughout the world by providing service to their communities and applying their talents and knowledge to improve the lives of others. Scholarship includes tuition and fees, stipend of £8,800, research allowance of £2,200, and round-trip airfare.

Canadian Studies Grant Program- Graduate Student Fellowship Program
Due 10/2008
The purpose of these fellowships is to promote research in the social sciences and humanities with a view to contributing to a better knowledge and understanding of Canada and its relationship with the US and/or other countries of the world by providing graduate students with the opportunity to conduct part of their doctoral research in Canada.  Priority topics include: bilateral trade and economics; Canada-US border issues; cultural policy and values; environmental, natural resources, and energy issues; security cooperation; and projects that examine Canadian politics, economics, culture, society or Canada's role in international affairs.  Applicants must be full-time doctoral students whose dissertations are related in substantial part to the study of Canada, Canada/US, or Canada/North America; should be advanced to candidacy prior to accepting the award.  Fellowship is up to $10,000 to help meet expenses while doing research in Canada.

Jacob Javits Fellowship Program
Due 10/2008
The Jacob Javits Fellowship provides financial assistance to doctoral students of superior ability in selected fields of the arts, humanities and social sciences.  Applications are limited to individuals who at the time of application have not yet completed their first year of graduate study or will be entering graduate school in the next academic year.  The fellowship provides a maximum stipend of $30,000 plus institutional payment of $11,511 for up to four years.

Social Science Research Council (SSRC) International Dissertation Field Research Fellowship (IDRF)
Due 11/2008
Supports dissertation field research in all areas and regions of the world that addresses issues which transcend single disciplines or area specializations.  Applicants must have fulfilled all pre-dissertation requirements by the start of the fellowship.  Provides up to $20,000 for nine to twelve months.

American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Eastern Europe Dissertation Fellowships
Due 11/2008
To support dissertation writing in the US after research is complete, although short visits to the countries of Eastern Europe may be proposed.  Applicants must have advanced to candidacy by the time the fellowship begins. Provides up to $17,000 for twelve months.

Spencer Foundation Dissertation Fellowships for Research Related to Education
Due 11/2008
Encourages a new generation of scholars from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields to undertake research relevant to the improvement of education.  Applicants must have completed all pre-dissertation requirements by June 1 of the year in which the fellowship is awarded and be positioned to complete the dissertation during the tenure of the fellowship.  Provides a $20,000 stipend.

Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships
Due 11/2008
The Ford Foundation Fellowship’s goals are to increase the diversity of the nation’s college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.  Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program.  For predissertation applicants, a $17,000 annual stipend and $5,000 for tuition and fees for up to three years is provided.  Dissertation applicants compete for a $21,000 stipend for one year.  Those interested may access the application directly at http://nrc58.nas.edu/nrconline/ford/login/login.asp.

Rockefeller Archive Center Scholar-in-Residence Program
Due 11/2008
Supports research in the historical collections at the Rockefeller Archive Center.  Researchers from any discipline who are engaged in studies that require an extended consecutive period of research in the collections at the Center are encouraged to apply.  Prior research experience at the Rockefeller Archive Center is strongly recommended. Strengths of the Center's collections, which date from the second half of the 19th century to the 1990s, include agriculture, the arts, African-American history, education, international relations and economic development, labor, medicine, philanthropy, politics, population, religion, science, the social sciences, social welfare, and women's history. Provides $5,000 per month for two to nine months.

Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships
Due 11/2008
Encourages original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences.  Applicants must have fulfilled all pre-dissertation requirements and be positioned to complete the dissertation during the tenure of the fellowship. In addition to topics in religious studies or in ethics, dissertations might consider the ethical implications of foreign policy, the values influencing political decisions, the moral codes of other cultures, and religious or ethical issues reflected in history or literature.  Provides a $19,000 stipend for 12 months of full-time dissertation writing.

American Research Institute in Turkey Research Fellowship
Due 11/2008
Supports graduate students engaged in research on ancient, medieval, or modern times in Turkey in any field of the humanities and social sciences.  Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program and have advanced to candidacy before the term of the award begins.  Provides stipends of $4,000 to $16,000 for periods for periods of two months to a year.

DAAD Graduate Research Study in Germany
Due 11/2008
Supports research requiring residence in Germany.  Applicants must possess knowledge of the German language commensurate with the demands of their project. Preference is give to applicants who have been invited by a faculty member at a German university. Applications must be submitted to Assistant Dean Edward Barnaby. Provides 715 Euro to 975 Euro monthly stipends for up to ten months.

The American-Scandinavian Foundation
Due 11/2008
For pursuit of research or advanced study in one or more Scandinavian country.  Applicants must have a well-defined research or study project that makes a stay in Scandinavia essential, at least some ability in the language of the host country, and must secure academic or professional affiliations in advance.  Fellowships (up to $20,000) and grants ($4,000) support project-related costs, including maintenance, trans-Atlantic round-trip travel, in country travel, tuition, fees, and materials expenditures. Projects should be planned to fall with the summer - summer period.

DAAD/Leo Baeck Institute Grants
Due 11/2008
Supports research on the social, communal, and intellectual history of German-speaking Jewry.  Applicants must have completed all pre-dissertation requirements. Terms: $2,000 for research at the Leo Baeck Institute in New York or a DAAD Graduate Scholarship for research in Germany.

Social Science Research Council (SSRC) Eurasia Pre-Dissertation Fellowships
Due 11/2008
Supports language study, training in analytical methods, and pursuing preliminary research related to the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and the New States of Eurasia.  Applicants must be graduate students who have not advanced to candidacy or submitted a prospectus (preference is given to those in their first or second years).  Regions and countries currently supported by the program include Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Terms: $3,000 to $7,000 for three months to one semester.

Huntington Library Fellowships
Due 12/2008
Supports research in the collections at The Huntington Library.  Applicant must have completed all pre-dissertation requirements and be pursuing research germane to the Huntington's holdings in British and American History, literature, art history, and the history of medicine and science.  Fellowship provides $2,000 to $2,300 per month for up to five months; continuous residence at the Huntington is required.

Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic Studies
Due 12/2008
To help exceptionally promising students prepare for careers of teaching and scholarship in humanistic disciplines.  Applicant must be a college senior or college graduate applying for graduate school admission. Fellowship provides graduate tuition and required fees for the first academic year plus $17,500 stipend.

American Antiquarian Society Visiting Academic Research Fellowships
Due 1/2009
Fellowship supports dissertation research in American history and culture through 1876 for doctoral students and offers a $1,000 per month stipend for up to three months.

National Security Education David L. Boren Graduate Fellowships
Due 1/2009
For the encouragement of U.S. graduate students to add an international dimension to their curricula. Since the purpose of NSEP is to promote study of underrepresented languages and areas critical to U.S. national security, study of Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand is excluded.  Applicants must be enrolled, or planning to enroll, in a graduate program. Recipients are restricted to specific research areas and topics. Please see website for more information.  Overseas study receives up to $10,000/semester; domestic study up to $12,000.  Fellowship provides support for overseas or domestic study, or a combination of both. Recipients are required to seek employment in a national security agency of the federal government.

Chateaubriand Fellowship Program
Due 1/2009
Supports research at a research institution in France in all fields of the humanities and social sciences.  Applicants must be enrolled in an American doctoral program and cannot be French citizens. Fellowship provides 1300 Euros per month for nine months, health insurance, round-trip travel to France, and thirty days of per diem support for research travel within France.

Smithsonian Institution Fellowships
Due 1/2009
Allows students to conduct research for ten-week periods (graduate fellowships) or three to twelve months (predoctoral fellowships) in association with Smithsonian research staff members.  Graduate Fellowship candidates must be formally enrolled in a graduate program of study but not advanced to candidacy.  Predoctoral Fellowship applicants must have completed coursework, qualifying exams, and be engaged in doctoral research.  Graduate Fellowships provide $5,500 while Predoctoral Fellowships provide $25,000 + allowances.

Houghton Library (Harvard College) Short-Term Fellowships
Due 1/2009
Supports scholars who require access to the Houghton Library, with holdings in European, English, American, and South American literature; philosophy; religion; and the history of science.  Applicant must have completed all the requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation and be pursuing research germane to Houghton's collections.  Provides a $2,750 stipend.  One month in residence at Harvard required.

The American Research Center in Egypt
Due 1/2009
The purpose is to promote knowledge of Egypt and the Near East through study and research, and to aid in the training of American specialists in academic disciplines that require familiarity with Egypt. Applicants must be students enrolled in doctoral programs at North American universities.  Depending on the source of funding, fellowships are granted for periods between 3 and 12 months. ARCE fellows receive a monthly stipend commensurate with academic status and number of accompanying dependents, plus round-trip air transportation for recipients only.

Richard U. Light Fellowship Program
Due 1/2009
Fellowship provides full funding for the study of Chinese, Korean or Japanese languages at selected sites in East Asia.  All registered Yale students are eligible, including students from the professional schools. Candidates must have achieved a basic proficiency (at least one year of intensive study at Yale or comparable program) in the target language but should not be a fluent speaker of the language. Applicants are encouraged to apply for periods of study longer than summer.  Expenses for travel, tuition, room and board, health insurance for a single term, full year, summer program or combination of those periods.

AAR Research Grants
Due 8/1
To fulfill its commitment to advance research in religion, the AAR each year grants awards ranging from $500 to $5000 to support projects proposed by AAR members and selected by the AAR Research Grants Review Committee. These projects can be either collaborative or individual and are intended to stimulate cooperative research among scholars in different institutions, with a focus on a clearly identified research project.  They may also be used for interdisciplinary work with scholars outside the field of religion, especially when such work shows promise of continuing beyond the year funded.  Grants can provide funds for networking and communication.  In addition, grants may be used to support small research conferences. Conference proposals will be considered only if they are designed primarily to advance research. Conferences presenting papers that report on previous research will not be considered.  Grant awards will range from $500 to $5000.

 

John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowships to Assist Research and Artistic Creation
Due 9/2008
The Fellowships are awarded to men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. The Foundation consults with distinguished scholars and artists regarding the accomplishments and promise of the applicants and presents this evidence to the Committee of Selection.  Appointments are ordinarily made for one year and in no instance for a period shorter than six consecutive months.  The amounts of the grants will be adjusted to the needs of the Fellows, considering their other resources and the purpose and scope of their plans.  Members of the teaching profession receiving sabbatical leave on full or part salary are eligible for appointment, as are holders of other Fellowships and of appointments at research centers.

Franklin Research Grants
Due 10/1
Applicants are expected to have a doctorate or to have published work of doctoral character and quality. Pre-doctoral graduate students are not eligible, but the Society is particularly interested in supporting the work of young scholars who have recently received their PhDs. American citizens and residents of the United States may use their Franklin awards at home or abroad. Foreign nationals must use their Franklin awards for research in the United States. Applicants who have received Franklin grants may reapply after an interval of two years. Funding is offered up to a maximum of $6,000 for use in calendar year 2008.

Sabbatical Grants
Due 10/15
The Sabbatical Fellowships program is open to mid-career faculty of universities and 4-year colleges in the United States who have been granted a sabbatical/research leave but for whom financial support from the home institution is available for only part of the year. Candidates must not have had financially supported leave at any time subsequent to September 1, 2004. The total of institutional and external support should not exceed the academic year salary for the year in which the fellowship is held. There is no restriction on where the fellow resides; indicate the appropriateness of available resources. The candidate's doctoral degree must have been conferred no later than 1999 and no earlier than 1986.

National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grants
Due 11/1
NEH challenge grants help institutions and organizations secure long-term improvements in and support for their humanities programs and resources. Awards are made to museums, public libraries, colleges, research institutions, historical societies and historic sites, public television and radio stations, universities, scholarly associations, state humanities councils, and other nonprofit entities.

National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge Grants
Due 11/1
Collaborative Research Grants support original research undertaken by a team of two or more scholars (or research coordinated by an individual scholar) that, because of its scope or complexity, requires additional staff and resources beyond the individual's salary.

The A. Whitney Griswold Faculty Research Fund
Due November 1st, February 1st, and April 1st annually
The A. Whitney Griswold Faculty Research Fund was established to assist Yale faculty members to undertake research in the humanities. The Fund awards grants for specific research projects to full-time faculty members on continuing appointment in any department or division of the University. Preference is given to first-time applicants and to applicants who do not have other current research grants at the institution.

The Frederick W. Hilles Publication Fund
Due November 1st and February 1st annually
This fund was established through the generosity of the late Frederick W. Hilles to assist younger scholars in the humanities at Yale with the publication of their original manuscripts.

Phillip Grants
Due 3/1
The committee prefers to support the work of younger scholars who have received the doctorate. Applications are also accepted from graduate students for research on master’s theses or doctoral dissertations.  The committee sometimes approves two awards to the same person within a five-year period.  The average award is about $2,500; grants do not exceed $3,000.

Book Awards
Due 3/20
In order to give recognition to new scholarly publications that make significant contributions to the study of religion, the American Academy of Religion offers Awards for Excellence.  The Awards honor works of distinctive originality, intelligence, creativity and importance, books that affect decisively how religion is examined, understood, and interpreted.
