Gene Outka is Dwight Professor of Philosophy and Christian Ethics. Before joining the Yale faculty in 1975, he taught for ten years in the Department of Religion at Princeton University. He has published Agape: An Ethical Analysis, which has been reprinted seven times and translated into Japanese and Korean. He is also co-editor of, and contributor to, the following books: Norm and Context in Christian Ethics; Religion and Morality; and Prospects for a Common Morality. He has published numerous scholarly articles in journals (including the Journal of Religious Ethics, Religious Studies Review, Journal of Religion, Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal, and the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics), encyclopedias, and essay collections (including the article “Universal Love and Impartiality” in The Love Commandments). He directed a residential seminar for college teachers sponsored by the NEH, and has received fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, NEH and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. He has been a temporary member of the senior common room at Oriel College, Oxford, and at Queens' College, Cambridge. Currently he serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Religious Ethics. He was Chair of the Department of Religious Studies from 1992 to 1995, and was President of the Society of Christian Ethics in 2001. Work in progress includes two book manuscripts, entitled respectively God and the Moral Life: Conversations in the Augustinian Tradition, and The Ethics of Love and the Problem of Abortion.
